In Faleyras, the church of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais combines a 12th-century Romanesque portal, a Gothic apse dating from 1544 and a Baroque painted decoration of rare delicacy - a living summary of the religious architecture of the Gironde.
Nestling in the peaceful Entre-Deux-Mers region, in the heart of a land of vineyards and gentle hills, the church of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais in Faleyras is one of those modest rural churches which, behind their apparent simplicity, conceal an architectural stratigraphy of astonishing richness. Listed as a Monument Historique in 2001, it bears witness to seven centuries of religious and artistic history, without ever having been the subject of the great historiographical uproar reserved for cathedrals - which is precisely what makes it so interesting. What sets Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais apart from many of the region's rural buildings is the remarkable clarity of its constructional layers. By following the stones, attentive visitors can reconstruct the dialogue between the Romanesque builders of the 12th century, the Gothic carpenters of the 16th century and the Baroque decorators of the 18th century. Each era has left its mark without erasing the one that preceded it, creating an architectural palimpsest of great sincerity. The experience is intimate and contemplative. The interior, bathed in light subdued by the Gothic windows on the southern flank, offers a striking contrast with the discreet western façade rebuilt in the 18th century. The eye is quickly drawn to the vaults, where a painted decoration of chubby angels' heads and garlands of flowers and fruit displays a joyous Baroque exuberance, almost unexpected in this rural setting. The surroundings add to the appeal of the place. Faleyras, a village in the Entre-Deux-Mers region set against the limestone hills that produce famous white wines, offers the church a setting of greenery and serenity. For travellers on the tourist routes of the Gironde, this is a stop-off off the beaten track, far from the crowds of Saint-Émilion, but just as steeped in history.
The church of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais has an elongated plan with a single nave enlarged by a north aisle, typical of rural buildings remodelled between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The exterior immediately reveals the chronological complexity of the building: the 12th-century Romanesque portal, soberly sculpted with a semicircular arch, contrasts with the Gothic mullioned bays on the south side, pierced during work in 1544, and with the discreetly classicist 18th-century west facade. The canted chevet, dated 1544 by an inscription, is the centrepiece of the Renaissance campaign: its polygonal geometry, common in late Gothic and Renaissance architecture in the south-west, breaks elegantly with the semi-circular Romanesque apse it replaces. Inside, the nineteenth-century barrel and rib vaults visually unify a space whose genesis is nonetheless highly disparate. The natural light, filtered through the southern Gothic windows, creates a peaceful atmosphere conducive to contemplation. The most surprising feature is the 18th-century painted decoration visible above the vaults of the nave: the angels' heads and trompe-l'œil garlands of flowers and fruit bear witness to a skilful decorative art, probably created by a travelling workshop specialising in the ornamentation of rural religious buildings in the Gironde. The materials used - cut local limestone for the structural parts, painted plaster for the interior decoration - are fully representative of the Entre-Deux-Mers building tradition.
