In the heart of the Trégor region, the commune of Ploulec'h conceals a discreet jewel that few travellers suspect: the church of Saint-Dogmaël, accompanied by its calvary and the granite fence of its cemetery, forms a parish complex of remarkable architectural and spiritual unity. Dedicated to an unusual Celtic saint - Dogmaël, a Welsh monk who came to evangelise the Armorican shores in the 6th century - the church's very name bears witness to the maritime and religious exchanges between Brittany and the British Isles. What sets Saint-Dogmaël apart from so many other rural Breton buildings is the coherence of its parish enclosure. The cemetery enclosure, the calvary and the church itself form an architectural dialogue conceived on the scale of the 17th century, a period when the Counter-Reformation breathed into the whole of Léon and Trégor an unprecedented impetus for construction and embellishment. The kersanton carvers and granite masons of the Lannion region left their sober and powerful mark here.
