In the heart of the village of Maussane-les-Alpilles, amidst centuries-old olive trees and Provencal sunlight, the church of Sainte-Croix stands out as one of the most accomplished examples of 18th-century architecture in the Bouches-du-Rhône region. Far from the great cathedrals that monopolise the limelight, this human-scale building reveals remarkable architectural sophistication, the fruit of collaboration between an enlightened patron and exceptional craftsmen. What really sets Sainte-Croix apart is the skilful articulation of its interior volumes. The double-crested vaults punctuate the nave with a mathematical precision that betrays the hand of a seasoned architect. But the real surprise lies in the baptistery: hexagonal in plan, it is crowned by a dome that floods the space with zenithal light, creating an effect of contemplation and spiritual elevation rarely achieved in a village church.
