History
In the heart of the Blayais region, between vineyards and oak forests, the church of Notre-Dame de Peujard stands like a stone sentinel above the village. Founded in the 11th century in the vigour of the Gregorian reform, it belongs to the family of rural Romanesque buildings that dot the right bank of the Gironde, modest in appearance but remarkably dense in history. What immediately sets it apart is the sophistication of its Saintonge-inspired portal, added in the 12th century: a sculpted work that bears witness to the vitality of artistic exchanges between Saintonge and Bordeaux at a time when the great Gothic cathedrals were beginning to transform the face of the Christian West. The building offers the attentive visitor a layered experience. The original Romanesque volume, massive and sober, contrasts with the lightness of the ornamental portal, its archivolts punctuated with geometric and floral motifs characteristic of the Saintonge school. The bell tower, also from the 12th century, was transformed into a defensive element during the Wars of Religion - crenellations, loopholes, modified openings - a reminder that the church was then the only refuge for the village community from the raids of Protestant or Catholic troops, depending on the circumstances. The interior does not disappoint those who know how to look for the layering of time. The vaults, rebuilt in the 18th century, give the nave a formal unity that is tempered by the Baroque baptismal font and, above all, the sumptuous altarpiece, a piece of gilded woodwork typical of late Tridentine piety in Aquitaine. The light, filtered through small windows, lends the whole an atmosphere of contemplative contemplation. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1908 - an early sign of national recognition - Notre-Dame de Peujard is today one of the discreet jewels of Gironde's Romanesque heritage. Its location in an unspoilt village, far from the mass tourist circuits, makes it an all the more precious discovery for those venturing along the secondary roads of the Entre-deux-Mers and Blayais regions.
Architecture
Notre-Dame de Peujard belongs to the rural Romanesque style of Aquitaine in its most sober form: a single nave extended by a choir with a semi-circular apse, and a layout that prioritises liturgical functionality over spatial complexity. The walls, built of rubble stone and ashlar quarried locally in the Blayais region, are in a regular pattern typical of 11th and 12th century craftsmanship. The bell tower, which stands on the right-hand bay of the choir or on the façade according to local custom, still bears the scars of its defensive transformations: a few narrow openings and the squat silhouette resulting from the reinforcements carried out during the Wars of Religion. The western portal is the architectural highlight of the building. Inspired by the Saintonge style, it features several archivolt scrolls sculpted with geometric sawtooth motifs, billets, human heads and leafy palmettes. This ornamental vocabulary, codified by the workshops of Saintonge during the 12th century, is executed here with a precision that suggests the intervention of specialised craftsmen rather than purely local labour. The historiated or ornamental capitals on the columns framing the tympanum complete this remarkably stylistically coherent sculptural ensemble. Inside, the nave, vaulted in the 18th century, has a semicircular barrel vault that unifies the space while partially masking the original Romanesque structure. The Baroque altarpiece on the high altar, a major piece of liturgical furniture, enlivens the back of the choir with its gilding and reliefs. The eighteenth-century baptismal font, in sculpted limestone, completes an interior where the different strata of the building's history are clearly visible.
