History
Perched in the heart of the village of Runan, in the Côtes-d'Armor region, Notre-Dame church, with its cemetery and monumental calvary, forms an exceptional ensemble that is one of the finest examples of flamboyant Gothic architecture in inland Brittany. Its remarkable preservation - its architectural details virtually unaltered since the 14th and 15th centuries - gives it a rare authenticity, far removed from the overzealous restorations that have sometimes obliterated the soul of other monuments in the region. What really sets Notre-Dame de Runan apart is the density of its heritage features in a small space. The Renaissance ossuary next to the bell tower bears witness to the persistence of Breton funeral practices at a time when Italian humanism was beginning to influence local architecture. A few metres further on, the calvary erected in the cemetery offers a striking sight: its statue-carved base is transformed into an open-air pulpit, an ingenious device that once enabled preachers to address the faithful gathered between the tombs. The visit is like travelling back in time. As they pass through the portal, visitors discover an interior where the light filtered through the stained glass windows plays against the granite masonry in the characteristic bluish-grey tones of the Trégor region. Each capital, each moulding, each console tells of the ambition of a medieval community anxious to glorify its faith in stone. The cemetery itself is well worth a careful stroll. Around the calvary, the headstones and crosses are a reminder that for centuries this place was the spiritual and social heart of the parish. The rural Brittany of the early Middle Ages can be seen in each of these stones, worn by the Atlantic rains and the passage of time.
Architecture
The church of Notre-Dame de Runan is part of the Breton flamboyant Gothic tradition, characterised by the use of local granite, a thankless but durable material that local stonemasons were able to work with remarkable precision. The plan of the building follows a classic basilica layout, with a nave and side aisles punctuated by slender pillars supporting ribbed vaults, the keystones of which are sometimes decorated with sculpted motifs. The windows, with their flamboyant tracery, bear witness to a strong decorative concern and allow light to penetrate generously into the building despite the thickness of the granite walls. Outside, the square or polygonal bell tower gives the building its characteristic vertical silhouette. The adjoining Renaissance ossuary provides a striking stylistic contrast: its semi-circular arches and pilaster decorations stand in stark contrast to the surrounding Gothic pointed arches and mouldings. This dialogue between two architectural periods lends the ensemble a visual richness that captures the attention of specialists and ordinary visitors alike. The monumental calvary in the cemetery is the third architectural highlight of the site. Its sculpted base, designed to accommodate a preacher in a space set aside for the purpose, is adorned with statues probably depicting scenes from the Passion and figures of saints, in the Breton iconographic tradition. Despite the vicissitudes suffered by its upper parts, the ensemble retains a remarkable expressive power and is a wonderful illustration of the synthesis between liturgical function, artistic ambition and community identity that characterises Breton parish heritage.
