Nestling in the bocage of deep Trégor, in Bulat-Pestivien, the church of Notre-Dame stands out as one of the most remarkable expressions of Breton architectural genius of the modern era. Listed as a historic monument since 1907, it masterfully combines the rigour of the flamboyant Gothic style with the emerging sensuality of the Renaissance, in a dialogue of grey stone that never ceases to amaze visitors. What makes Notre-Dame de Bulat truly unique is the coherence of its sculpted decoration, which is unusually rich for a rural parish church. The southern porch, a veritable manifesto of the Breton faith in the 16th century, displays a gallery of local apostles and saints treated with striking realism. The stonemasons from Kersant and the granite region have competed with each other to offer the faithful an open-air catechism in stone. The interior is full of other surprises: the nave, with its upturned ship's hull, is typical of the Léon and Trégor regions, and creates a light, contemplative atmosphere. The plan is that of a church with a single nave flanked by less-developed side aisles, a common feature of rural parishes in Trégor and Central Brittany in the 16th century. The exterior is striking for the power of its western bell tower-porch, both massive and slender, whose hooked belfries and polygonal spire contrast with the horizontal line of the slate roof. The southern porch is the building's crowning glory, with its three-lobed arches and niches housing a series of statues of Breton apostles and saints, some of whose original polychrome can still be seen in places. The archivolts combine Gothic plant scrolls and Renaissance-inspired medallion motifs, bearing witness to the stylistic syncretism typical of Breton workshops in the second half of the 16th century. The interior features a chestnut wood frame in the shape of an inverted hull, a technical solution typical of Armorican religious architecture that is both economical and aesthetically harmonious. The chancel, which is slightly elevated, has preserved the remains of wall paintings and liturgical furnishings - altar, altarpieces and statues - some of which date back to the 17th century. The stained glass windows, some of which are modern, do not mask the quality of the Gothic windows, whose stonework provides an elegant backlight.
