In the heart of the Beauce region of the Loire, the church of Notre-Dame de Boiscommun stands out as one of the most complete witnesses to the development of Gothic architecture in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Away from the main tourist routes, it offers a lesson in architecture in action: each bay, each layer of stone tells the story of a stage in its long genesis, spread over three centuries of continuous construction. What makes Notre-Dame de Boiscommun truly unique is the legibility of its construction phases. Where many medieval buildings have been homogenised by untimely restoration, this one retains the visible seams between the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries: the robust pillars of the choir, the rigour of the 13th-century cornice, the vertical momentum of the late Gothic windows and the flamboyant lacework of the 15th-century buttresses follow one another like the pages of a living textbook. Inside, visitors are struck by the coherence of the space, despite this palimpsest-like construction. The three-vessel nave offers a striking perspective from the west portal, where the eye naturally glides towards the original chevet, the oldest fragment of the building. The triforium, which spans several bays, gives the elevation a sophistication that is rare for a town of this size, evoking the great collegiate churches of the Paris Basin. The exterior setting is also worthy of note: set in the centre of the village, the building dominates the skyline of Boiscommun, a modest county town that was nevertheless a strategic trading post on the Beauce roads in the Middle Ages. Its 15th-century buttresses, soberly moulded side portals and stone staircase at the front bear witness to a sustained architectural ambition over the long term. The church of Notre-Dame de Boiscommun adopts the characteristic plan of the great Gothic collegiate churches of the region: a nave with three sections - a central nave flanked by two aisles - extended by a choir with a flat or slightly polygonal chevet, as was common practice in the Gothic style of the Paris Basin and the Loire Valley in the 13th century. The bell tower, integrated into the first bays of the nave on the north side, forms a vertical focal point visible from the surrounding Beauceron plains. One of the most remarkable features of the building is its three-level interior - large arcades, triforium and high windows. The presence of a triforium spanning several bays, from the earliest parts to the 14th-century additions, places Notre-Dame de Boiscommun in the tradition of carefully crafted Gothic buildings, well beyond what would be expected of a village church of this size. The 13th-century pillars probably have cylindrical shafts with hooked capitals, in the classical Gothic tradition. The external buttresses changed over the course of the campaigns: more massive and orthogonal in the medieval sections, they became more slender and projecting in the flamboyant 15th-century additions. The portals deserve particular attention: the 13th-century west portal must have had a sculptural programme consistent with the iconographic conventions of the period, while the two later 15th-century side portals reflect the flamboyant aesthetic in their treatment of the mouldings and voussures. The stone staircase in the façade, a functional addition from the 15th century, is a rare architectural curiosity, testifying to the care taken over the practical organisation of the building in addition to its aesthetic dimension.
