Nestling in the heart of the Périgord Vert, in the commune of Villac, Domaine Le Noyer discreetly and elegantly embodies the art of living of the French provincial gentry of the Age of Enlightenment. Far from the glitz and glamour of Versailles, this residence of character is a testament to a well-thought-out architectural style, where rural functionality blends with a strong concern for aesthetics, typical of the cultured builders of the 18th-century Dordogne. What distinguishes Le Noyer from the countless country manor houses in the region is precisely this balance between the solidity of the Périgord building style - cut limestone, steeply pitched roofs, meticulous dormer windows - and the classical lightness evident in the composition of the facades, the regularity of the openings and the grace of the ashlar surrounds. Together, they form a coherent architectural picture, typical of the well-to-do rural homes that flourished in the Dordogne during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Domaine Le Noyer is in the architectural tradition of 18th-century Périgord country houses, characterised by symmetry, clear volumes and restrained yet meticulous ornamentation. The main building probably has a well-ordered facade, punctuated by stone-paned or small-timbered windows topped by delicately moulded pediments or archivolts, in accordance with local custom at the time. Blonde Périgord limestone, the region's favourite material, makes up the majority of the walls, giving them a warm hue that turns golden in the setting sun. The roof, typical of Périgord buildings, has a steep slope and is covered in flat tiles or limestone slate, with triangular or arched pediment roof dormers that light up the attic space. The outbuildings - stables, barn, wine storehouse or dovecote - undoubtedly complete the ensemble, forming an enclosed courtyard or forecourt, in keeping with the classic layout of the region's noble agricultural estates. Like most opulent buildings of this era in the Dordogne, the interior of the residence would have featured a stone grand staircase with a forged banister, reception rooms with fireplaces and moulded mantelpieces, and painted or natural wood panelling typical of the provincial Louis XV and Louis XVI taste. The adjoining park or garden, although it may have changed over the centuries, probably retains the semi-champestral, semi-ordered character typical of the enlightened rural residences of the 18th century Périgord.
