Nestling in the hills of Venelles, Violaine's residence reveals the discreet elegance of a Provencal country house, with its ochre facades bathed in Mediterranean light and its grounds planted with pine and olive trees.
In the heart of the Aix-en-Provence region, between Mount Sainte-Victoire and the plain of the River Arc, Domaine de Violaine gracefully embodies the finest of Provencal art de vivre. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1993, it belongs to the family of Aix bastides that shaped the region's cultural and architectural landscape between the 17th and 19th centuries. Far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, Venelles offered its owners an ideal holiday setting, halfway between the parliamentary city of Aix and the wilderness of the Trévaresse massif. What makes the Violaine estate so special is precisely this combination of aristocratic sobriety and southern sensuality that characterises the best examples of bastide architecture. The main building, with its classical layout, is set in wooded grounds that combine Mediterranean species with formal gardens, reflecting the cultural ambitions of its patrons. The very name of the estate, Violaine, evokes a Provençal poetry that owes nothing to chance: residences of this rank often bore the name of an owner or a tutelary female figure. Venelles, perched on the limestone foothills overlooking the Arc valley, enjoys exceptional sunshine and uninterrupted views towards the Aix countryside. It's in this setting that Domaine de Violaine displays its assets: a controlled layout, generous outdoor spaces, and architecture that captures the light of Provence without ever overpowering it. The honey-coloured and cream-coloured local stone absorbs and releases the sun's heat at different times of the day, offering visitors an ever-changing spectacle. The partial listing as a Historic Monument reflects the State's recognition of the heritage value of this ensemble, protecting both the most outstanding architectural features and, in all likelihood, certain components of the park and outbuildings. This protection guarantees the continued existence of an invaluable testimony to the culture of noble and middle-class holiday-making in Provence, at a time when Aix-en-Provence shone as the intellectual and artistic capital of the South of France.
The Domaine de Violaine is in the tradition of the Provençal country houses of the Pays d'Aix region, characterised by a symmetrically arranged main building, generally facing south to make the most of the Mediterranean sunshine. The main facade follows the classic model used in the region: a two- or three-storey elevation, punctuated by bays of mullioned or small-timbered windows, crowned by a two- or three-row canal tile spandrel roof, the characteristic overhang that protects the walls from the rain and summer heat. The local limestone, quarried in the Pays d'Aix region, lends a warm tone to the whole, ranging from light ochre to off-white. The outbuildings, stables, sheds and farm outbuildings, arranged in a U or L shape around a paved main courtyard, complete the functional organisation of the estate and bear witness to the economic importance of these properties, over and above their function as holiday homes. The parkland probably combines a formal part - straight paths, geometric flowerbeds, a pool or fountain fed by an irrigation canal - with more natural areas planted with umbrella pines, holm oaks and hundred-year-old olive trees, vegetation that is emblematic of limestone Provence. The interior of the residence no doubt retains the layout typical of this type of building: a central vestibule leading to the reception rooms on the ground floor, a monumental carved stone staircase leading to the flats on the first floor, French ceilings or ceilings adorned with stucco, and floors in red terracotta tiles or limestone flagstones. These local materials, combined with joinery painted in pearl grey or Provençal green, create the inimitable atmosphere of the bastide interiors of the Aix region.
