History
Nestling in the heart of Floirac, on the outskirts of Bordeaux, Domaine de Sybirol is one of those residences whose stones bear the delicious weight of the centuries. A rectangular Carthusian monastery in the purest Giroudin style of the 18th century, it is immediately striking for the grace of its facade, where two stretched wings frame the central bay like the arms of a minuet set in stone. What makes Sybirol truly unique is the exceptional quality of its preserved interiors. In the reception rooms, French panelling, finely wrought stuccowork and grand fireplaces interact as they did on the first day, providing a rare testimony to the art of living à la bordelaise under the reign of Louis XV. There are no reconstructions or museographic tricks here: the house still exudes the hushed, polished atmosphere of the great merchant houses of the Garonne basin. The park, redesigned in the second half of the 19th century by landscape gardener Fischer, adds an extra dimension to the visit. His plant compositions, typical of the Romantic landscape garden, create a verdant setting that elegantly isolates the Carthusian monastery from the outside world, inviting visitors to take a contemplative stroll between light and shade. The main façade reveals the particular care taken with the classical composition. The slightly accentuated central bay is crowned by two very elongated fins - a distinctive feature that is quite rare in Bordeaux architecture - and an elegantly proportioned cornice that emphasises the horizontality of the whole. This decorative solution, halfway between the Baroque broken pediment and classical ornamentation, gives Sybirol a silhouette that is instantly recognisable among the homes of its era. Inside, the reception rooms have retained their 18th-century decorations with remarkable integrity: carved wood panelling covering the walls to half or full height, stucco panels with rocaille or floral motifs adorning the overdoors and cornices, and fireplaces in veined marble or finely carved limestone. This ensemble is a coherent and authentic testimony to the decorative arts of the Regency and Louis XV periods, of a quality comparable to the finest middle-class residences in the Bordeaux region.
