An elegant 18th-century residence nestling on the shores of Lake Annecy, the Châteauvieux estate offers a striking dialogue between classical Savoyard architecture and the reflections of the lake, in the natural setting of Duingt.
Set on the shores of the turquoise waters of Lake Annecy, the Châteauvieux estate is one of the finest seigneurial properties on the western shore of the lake, in the commune of Duingt. Set against the backdrop of the Haute-Savoie region, this eighteenth-century château stands in a landscape of rare majesty, combining the serenity of the water with the verticality of the Alps. Its double listing as a Historic Monument - in 1988 and again in 1994 - testifies to the exceptional heritage value of an ensemble that goes beyond mere architecture to embrace a lakeside lifestyle that is unique to Savoie. What makes Châteauvieux so special is precisely this combination of architectural sobriety and the splendour of the site. Where other residences make a spectacle of themselves, this one elegantly fades into the background of the natural beauty that surrounds it. The meticulous facades, the roofs characteristic of Savoyard tradition and the layout of the volumes in the landscape bear witness to a perfect mastery of architectural integration, typical of the great noble estates of the region in the Age of Enlightenment. In addition to the main building, the estate includes a series of outbuildings and gardens, making it a truly historic place to live. The planted surroundings, shaped by successive generations, play with the light from the lake and harmoniously extend the architectural space towards the watery horizon. Whatever the season, the view of Châteauvieux from the shores of the lake or from the surrounding heights is one of enduring beauty. For visitors, discovering Châteauvieux means immersing themselves in the hushed atmosphere of aristocratic Savoie, the home of families who combined continental refinement with mountain rusticity. The estate invites you to take a contemplative as well as historical stroll, following in the footsteps of an art of building in which every window frames a landscape and every terrace is in dialogue with the lake. Lovers of architectural heritage, photographers in search of Alpine light and walkers around Lake Annecy will all find here a reward that lives up to their expectations.
The Châteauvieux estate is an example of 18th-century Savoyard residential classicism, characterised by a balanced composition of volumes and a restrained ornamental style typical of Alpine residences of the period. The main building probably has a rectangular floor plan with three levels - basement, first floor and attic - a typical layout for mansions built between the reigns of Victor-Amédée II and Charles-Emmanuel III of Savoie. The facades are punctuated by rows of windows with ashlar frames, soberly moulded according to the classical canons handed down from the great French and Piedmontese manufacturers. The roof, a defining feature of Savoyard architecture, has four sloping sides and a steep pitch, adapted to the rigours of Alpine winters. The local materials - limestone rubble, slate or lauze depending on the part of the building - anchor the building in its geography and give it the characteristic bluish-grey hue of Haute-Savoie buildings. The outbuildings and service quarters that make up the estate follow an ordered overall logic, typical of large seigneurial estates, where functional organisation goes hand in hand with a desire for representation. The estate's lakeside location is in itself a major architectural feature: the relationship between the buildings and the water, created by terraces, walkways and stepped gardens, demonstrates a sophisticated approach to landscaping. This integration of the landscape into the architectural composition, inherited from Italian villas and adapted to the Alpine context, makes Châteauvieux a rare and precious example of the Savoyard art of living on the lake in the Age of Enlightenment.
