History
Nestling between the sparkling waters of the Bay of Arcachon and the pine forests of the Landes region, Domaine de Certes is one of the most unique estates on the Gironde coast. This exceptional estate, whose origins date back to the 1840s, is not a château in the traditional sense of the term: it is first and foremost a coherent architectural ensemble, designed around a fish-farming vocation that gives it an identity that is unique in France. Here, architecture is in constant dialogue with the aquatic landscape of ponds, clearings and channels that structure the estate. What makes Certes truly unique is the layering of its artistic influences. The main residence, built around 1840 in a neoclassical style embellished with elegant colonnades, was extensively reinterpreted in the 1930s with an interior décor of rare Art Deco coherence. Sculpted fireplaces, refined panelling, period wallpaper and fabrics, geometrically patterned tiles, furniture integrated into the woodwork: the interior is a true testament to the art of living between the wars, intact and preciously preserved. The visit begins at the entrance to the estate, under a monumental pergola with a bold architectural originality, a far cry from the austere gates of traditional châteaux. Visitors then discover the vast stud farm, built in 1880, whose long facades are punctuated by pilaster buttresses, giving the whole an almost monastic solemnity. These buildings bear witness to the importance of livestock rearing and farm management in the large estates of the Gironde bourgeoisie. The stud farms built in 1880 are an architectural achievement in their own right. Their long façades, structured by a regular rhythm of pilaster buttresses, reflect the influence of the rationalist construction style of the late 19th century, when agricultural and industrial architecture readily borrowed from the vocabulary of civil architecture. The monumental entrance to the estate, designed as a pergola, is an original welcoming feature, evoking the entrances to Mediterranean estates as much as the great wine estates of Bordeaux. The interior of the main residence is the jewel of the site. The 1930s decorating project produced an Art Deco programme of great integrity: sleek fireplaces, geometric panelling, tiles with abstract motifs, carefully selected wallpapers and fabrics, custom-designed furniture integrated into the wood panelling on the walls.
