History
In the heart of Pian-sur-Garonne, in a region of the Sud-Gironde where vines and stone compete for the landscape, the Domaine de Bellecroix stands out as one of those discreet ploughing châteaux that have shaped the region's winegrowing identity. Far from the ostentatious splendour of the Bordeaux river region, it cultivates a measured elegance, that of provincial architecture that knows how to combine solidity and refinement without ever seeking to dazzle. What sets Bellecroix apart from other residences of its time is the happy coherence of its architectural ensemble. The round tower in the north-west corner is a reminder of medieval defensive practices, reinterpreted here as an ornamental motif rooted in the Gascon building tradition. The link between the rectangular main building and the courtyard enclosed by two sets of outbuildings creates an architectural tableau in which each volume seems to be in constant dialogue with the others. Visiting the estate is an invitation to take your time: observe the main façade, decipher the traces of the 18th and 19th century alterations to the upstairs windows, and imagine the generations of owners who have adapted this place to their uses. The west gable wall, where the date 1670 has been engraved, is a testament to the pride of the original owner. The setting remains strongly marked by the estate's winegrowing history. This element, a distant descendant of medieval defensive systems, plays an essentially ornamental and symbolic role here, giving the building an aristocratic presence that is in keeping with the local building tradition. On the south side, two sets of asymmetrical outbuildings frame the courtyard, forming an enclosed courtyard that clearly organises the estate's residential and agricultural functions. This asymmetry, far from being a defect, bears witness to construction in successive stages, with each campaign of work responding to specific needs. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century alterations, particularly in the treatment of the first-floor windows, introduced wider, better-proportioned openings in line with the classical canons in vogue at the time. The interior layout, which was also redesigned at the same time, reflects changes in lifestyles and domestic comfort in the provinces over two centuries.
