History
In the heart of the Pays d'Aix, between ochre hills and fragrant garrigue, the Domaine d'Arnajon stands like a preserved fragment of the Provencal art of living under the Ancien Régime. Built around 1666-1667, this seigniorial country house combines the rigour of the classical plan with the decorative fantasy that characterises the great residences of the Midi: here, every nook and cranny tells the story of an era, and every surface is a lesson in the history of the arts. What sets Arnajon apart from its peers is the exceptional coherence of its landscaped grounds. The park, laid out between the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth centuries, combines formal gardens, terraced kitchen gardens and water features in a composition where Provençal geometry meets the influence of Italian gardens. The highlight is an octagonal nymphaeum with a central pool and niches adorned with caryatids, a discreet masterpiece of Provençal Baroque ornamental statuary. Inside, visitors are struck by the quality of the preserved decor. Two drawing rooms still display their original wallpaper from the late 18th century - double-height arabesques of astonishing freshness - while a bedroom on the second floor reveals a rare wallpaper with a revolutionary cockerel motif, an almost unique example of the decorative art of the French Revolution. The chapel, dating from 1875, completes the ensemble with its colourful stained glass windows and murals, one of which depicts Marie de Solliers and her mother. The estate's outbuildings are also full of architectural surprises: an intact dovecote with its central pivoting post and revolving ladder, an 18th-century orangery, an ice house and a shell grotto documented as early as 1692. Photographers and heritage enthusiasts will find an inexhaustible wealth of images here, from the Provençal lights to walled gardens and architectural details of a rare quality.
Architecture
The Arnajon estate is in the tradition of the classic Provencal bastide, as it developed around Aix-en-Provence in the second half of the 17th century. The main building, rectangular in plan, was doubled in depth in the 19th century; it stands on a basement of barrel-vaulted cellars, a ground floor, two square storeys and a non-accessible attic. The main staircase, with its central daylight and straight flight, illuminated by a stained glass window to the north, structures the interior layout with a sober elegance characteristic of southern classicism. Two corner pavilions flank the entrance to the courtyard of honour: one serves as a caretaker's cottage, the other is a dovecote whose interior features - pivoting central post, gallows and revolving ladder - are still intact, a rare technical curiosity. The octagonal nymphaeum is the most remarkable architectural feature of the estate. Built at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the tradition of Baroque grottoes and ornamental fountains, it features a central pool, peripheral niches and a caryatid décor that is directly reminiscent of the monumental fountains of Italian holiday resorts. The shell grotto, documented as early as 1692, belongs to the same precious ornamental vocabulary. The adjoining chapel to the west, dating from 1875, introduces a neo-Gothic note with its coloured stained glass windows and murals, while the eighteenth-century orangery and nineteenth-century factories complete an architectural ensemble of great stylistic diversity, marvellously united by the blond limestone of the Pays d'Aix region.
