Standing on the limestone plateaux of the Lot, the Pierre Levée de Nougayrac is a Neolithic dolmen listed as a Historic Monument, a silent witness to a humanity that disappeared five millennia ago, standing guard over an austerely beautiful limestone landscape.
In the heart of the Causse de Gramat, in the commune of Fontanes-du-Causse in the Lot département, the Pierre Levée de Nougayrac rises from the limestone plateau like an enigmatic message to posterity. This dolmen, erected in the Neolithic period some 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, is one of a constellation of megaliths dotted around the Causses du Quercy, bearing witness to the intense funerary and ritual activity of the first agro-pastoral societies to settle in the region. What gives the Pierre Levée de Nougayrac its special character is both its geographical location and its remarkable state of preservation. Standing on a slightly raised promontory on the Causse plateau, the structure dominates a mineral landscape of dry grassland, ancient box trees and rocky outcrops - a setting that has hardly changed since Neolithic hands first hoisted the limestone slabs. The raw architecture of the monument, reduced to its very essence, is striking in its evocative power: no ornamentation, no fioritur, just matter and intention. The experience of visiting the site offers a rare opportunity for communion with Europe's oldest human history. Approaching the dolmen at dawn or dusk, when the low-angled light sculpts the surfaces of the slabs and casts long shadows on the limestone, allows you to appreciate the colossal ambition of those who built it. The silence of the causse, scarcely disturbed by the wind or the cry of a short-toed eagle, reinforces this feeling of travelling through time. The Fontanes-du-Causse region is home to several archaeological sites from this period, making the Pierre Levée de Nougayrac part of a wider megalithic network that illustrates the density of Neolithic settlement on the Quercy plateaux. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1989, the dolmen is protected to ensure that this age-old heritage is preserved for future generations. A visit to the dolmen is a natural part of a wider discovery of the prehistoric Lot, with its decorated caves and megalithic architecture.
The Pierre Levée de Nougayrac features the classic morphology of the corridor dolmens of the Caussenard type, a regional variant of West European megalithism. The structure consists of a burial chamber delimited by several orthostats - vertical slabs of local limestone - on which rests a large horizontal covering table. This elementary trilithic system, with its implacable constructive logic, has enabled the monument to survive millennia without major collapse. The materials used come exclusively from local resources: limestone from the Causse de Gramat, a stone that is both abundant and easy to cut into regular slabs along the natural stratification planes. The surface of the slabs, which have been exposed to the elements for centuries, has the characteristic patina of Quercy limestone - grey and orange lichens, superficial concretions - which contribute to the wild aesthetic of the monument. The typical dimensions of such a dolmen on the Lot causse suggest a chamber around 2 to 3 metres long and 1.5 to 2 metres wide, with a height under the table varying between 1 and 1.5 metres. As with the vast majority of megalithic monuments in this region, the dolmen's orientation probably follows an east-west axis, or slightly shifted towards sunrise, in line with Neolithic funerary customs that associated the rising sun with the idea of rebirth or passage to the afterlife. Originally, the chamber was probably covered by a mound of earth and dry stone, of which only rare traces remain, giving the monument the appearance of an open dolmen that it has today.
