Vestige néolithique discret niché dans les landes du Morbihan, le dolmen de Keryargon témoigne d'une architecture funéraire vieille de plus de 5 000 ans, inscrite aux Monuments Historiques en 2023.
In the heart of the Auray region, between the shores of the Ria d'Étel and the hedged farmland of inland Morbihan, the Keryargon dolmen stands out like a silent, tenacious presence in the Breton landscape. This megalithic monument, whose massive stones have survived five millennia without flinching, belongs to the constellation of collective burial sites that Neolithic populations erected with a precision and intention that continue to fascinate archaeologists and visitors alike. The dolmen at Keryargon are typical of Armorican funerary architecture, with orthostats - large slabs standing vertically - forming the walls of a burial chamber covered by one or more roofing slabs. The apparent roughness of the whole conceals remarkable engineering: these granite blocks, sometimes weighing several tonnes, were selected, transported and assembled with a mastery that testifies to advanced social organisation and a detailed knowledge of the territory. A visit to Keryargon takes you back to the earliest days of peasant life in Brittany, when Neolithic farming communities shaped their space to honour their dead and assert their presence on the land. The communion between the rough stone, the changing light of the Morbihan and the silence of the surrounding area gives this site a rare solemnity, far removed from the tourist hustle and bustle of the great megalithic complexes of Carnac or Locmariaquer. The commune of Belz, bathed by the waters of the Ria d'Étel, forms a natural setting of understated beauty for this monument. Lovers of wilderness heritage and ancient human geography will find it an authentic experience, halfway between contemplation and historical investigation. Registration as a Historic Monument in July 2023 will establish the heritage value of this long-ignored dolmen, and pave the way for greater appreciation of this precious fragment of Breton collective memory.
The Keryargon dolmen belong to the large family of simple single-chamber dolmens, an architectural type widespread throughout Morbihan and characteristic of the early phases of Armorican megalithism. Its structure is based on the fundamental principle of corbelled or trilith architecture: slabs of local granite, standing vertically in orthostats, delimit a rectangular or trapezoidal interior space, covered by one or more horizontal stone tables whose own weight ensures the stability of the whole. Pink or grey granite from the Auray region, a rock abundant in the Morbihan subsoil, is the only material used in this building, giving it its muted mineral hue, between pearl grey and pale ochre depending on the light of day. The dimensions of the monument, comparable to those of similar dolmens in the region, suggest a sepulchral chamber around two to three metres long and one to one-and-a-half metres wide on the inside, topped by a covering table weighing up to several tonnes. The entrance to the dolmen was probably at one end of the chamber, sometimes marked by a slab pierced by a circular porthole - characteristic of certain Armorican dolmens - symbolically allowing passage between the world of the living and that of the dead. It is likely that the entire structure was originally buried beneath a dry stone cairn or earth mound, whose gradual disappearance over the centuries has exposed the lithic structure we see today.
