Aux portes de Carnac, le dolmen à galerie de Coët-à-Tous déploie ses imposants orthostates néolithiques dans un silence millénaire. Un monument funéraire d'exception, classé depuis 1928, niché au cœur du pays mégalithique breton.
In the heart of the Quiberon peninsula, in the commune of Carnac, which boasts one of the most remarkable concentrations of megaliths in the world, the gallery dolmen of Coët-à-Tous - also known as Mané-Grageux - stands out as one of the most eloquent witnesses to the building fervour of the Neolithic populations of the 5th millennium BC. Far from the crowds that flock to the famous alignments of Kermario and Ménec, this dolmen invites you to meditate and contemplate a skilfully mastered funerary art. What makes Coët-à-Tous unique among the many megalithic monuments in the region is the remarkable preservation of its burial chamber and access gallery, typical of the corridor burials typical of the Armorican Middle Neolithic. The large slabs of local granite, laid with disconcerting precision for the period, form a solemn corridor leading to the main chamber, a space once reserved for the burial of the deceased and their offerings. This rough stone architecture goes beyond the simple sepulchral function: it reveals a structured society, capable of mobilising considerable resources to honour its dead. Visiting the site offers an experience of being fully present, far removed from intrusive museographic displays. You can approach the megaliths at man's height, measure the thickness of the covering slabs with your eyes, and imagine the funeral rites that took place here over six thousand years ago. The low-angled light of the morning or late afternoon, playing on the textures of the Breton granite, sublimates the architectural power of the whole. The natural setting contributes to the special atmosphere of the site. Surrounded by the bocage vegetation characteristic of inland Morbihan, the Coët-à-Tous dolmen is part of an unspoilt landscape that enhances the feeling of stepping back in time. Photography enthusiasts will find plenty of material for striking shots, particularly in the golden hours when the Atlantic light envelops the stones in a warm, unreal hue. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1928, this dolmen enjoys well-deserved protection, guaranteeing its integrity for future generations. Its proximity to the other megalithic sites of Carnac makes it a must-see for anyone wishing to embrace the extraordinary prehistoric heritage of Morbihan in all its diversity.
The gallery dolmen at Coët-à-Tous belong to the family of megalithic corridor burials, the dominant type in Neolithic Morbihan. Its structure is based on the fundamental architectural principle of corbelling and trilithism: large vertical granite slabs - the orthostates - support horizontal covering slabs, the tables or capstones, to form a covered burial chamber. The access gallery, oriented along a preferential axis often facing the east or the rising sun at solstice, is the distinctive feature of this architectural sub-type compared with single-chamber dolmens. The materials used are exclusively local granite, a rock abundant in the geological substratum of Morbihan and which gives the constructions their characteristic massive and perennial appearance. The blocks, estimated to weigh between two and fifteen tonnes depending on their position in the building, have undergone minimal roughing, preserving the raw appearance of the rock. No binders or mortars are used: the stability of the whole is based solely on the balance of the masses and the precise positioning of the elements, bearing witness to remarkably effective empirical engineering. The main chamber, accessible from the gallery via a possible closing scupper, would originally have been covered by a tumulus of earth and stones that protected the funerary complex while giving it a monumental appearance in the landscape. The partial or total disappearance of this cairn over the centuries is common to most Breton dolmens, revealing the stone structure in its current architectural bareness. The total length of the building, including the gallery, is within the usual dimensions for monuments of this type in Morbihan, i.e. between eight and fifteen metres.
