One of the major Neolithic remains in Morbihan, this gallery dolmen in Belz retains the base of its original burial mound - an exceptional example of Breton funerary architecture, listed as a Historic Monument in 1934.
In the heart of the Belz region, in Brittany's Morbihan region, stands one of the rare gallery dolmens to have preserved a significant part of its original burial mound. This double privilege - the burial chamber and its mantle of earth - makes it an archaeological document of rare value, at a time when most of the region's megaliths have long since lost their tumulus envelope, left bare to the weather and the centuries. The monument belongs to the large family of covered walkways or corridor dolmens, an architectural type characteristic of the Breton Late Neolithic (between 3,500 and 2,500 BC). These constructions served as collective burial sites: generation after generation of coastal farming communities laid their dead to rest here, along with ceramic offerings, flint tools and variscite ornaments. The fact that the base of the burial mound is still in place means that researchers can now understand the original volumes and the earthmoving techniques used by these anonymous builders. To visit this dolmen is to resonate with a landscape that has been inhabited for over five millennia. Morbihan is home to the highest density of megaliths in Europe, and Belz is an integral part of this sacred geography that stretches from Carnac to the shores of the Gulf. The calm of the surrounding area, the low-lying vegetation typical of the Breton bocage and the Atlantic light give the site a contemplative atmosphere conducive to meditation on the origins of our civilisation. The classification of the monument as a Historic Monument by decree of 22 August 1934 bears witness to the early awareness of the heritage value of Breton megaliths. This protection guarantees the integrity of the site and prohibits any excavation or modification without ministerial authorisation, thus preserving a heritage that is only now beginning to be fully understood thanks to advances in modern archaeology.
The Belz gallery dolmen belong to the type known as "covered alley with corridor", an architectural form emblematic of the Atlantic Neolithic. It consists of a main burial chamber - a polygonal space delimited by several orthostats (vertical slabs) made of local granite - extended by a narrower access corridor generally oriented towards the east or the summer sunrise, in accordance with the ritual practices of the period. The whole structure is crowned by one or more horizontal cover slabs (tables), which can weigh several dozen tonnes in the case of the largest regional specimens. The key feature of this monument is the partial preservation of the base of its burial mound. This mantle of earth and small stones, which originally enveloped the entire structure, giving it the appearance of an artificial mound, makes it possible to restore the original proportions of the monument and to appreciate the considerable investment involved in its construction. Most of the dolmens in Morbihan have lost this envelope over the centuries, falling victim to ploughing, pastoralism and the removal of materials. The survival of this base in Belz makes it a precious witness to Neolithic construction techniques. The materials used are characteristic of the local geology: coarse-grained granite or metamorphic schist, depending on the outcrops available near the site. The rough-cut surfaces of the orthostats sometimes bear traces of staking or, on certain comparable dolmens in Morbihan, schematic engravings (axes, crosses, shield signs), the presence of which has yet to be confirmed on this specific monument. The whole structure bears witness to a remarkable architectural mastery, based on the balance of the masses and the solidarity of the elements without any binders.
