In the heart of the Trégor region, this monumental cross in Pleumeur-Gautier stands out as one of the most eloquent markers of popular devotion in Brittany. Erected in the 18th century from the grey granite that is so characteristic of the region, it is part of the long-standing tradition of calvaries and wayside crosses that have dotted the Armorican landscape since the Middle Ages, reaching their formal apogee under the Ancien Régime. What sets this cross apart from the many similar examples in the Côtes-d'Armor department is the quality of the carving and the mastery of the overall composition. The Christ on the Cross, carved with the sober yet powerful expressiveness typical of workshops in the Lannion and Tréguier region, is accompanied by secondary figures treated with particular care. The whole reveals the hand of a master stonemason trained in the iconographic traditions of Tréguier. A visit to this monument invites you to take a contemplative break in an unspoilt rural setting. The back of the crosspiece traditionally features a representation of the Virgin Mary or a local patron saint, possibly Saint Gautier or Saint Yves, tutelary figures of the Trégor region. The technical mastery of the local sculptors can be seen in the drapery, the delicacy of the faces and the precision of the hands, despite the harshness of the granite material. The style, halfway between the Baroque heritage of the Grand Siècle and a more popular sensibility typical of Breton art, gives the ensemble that uniqueness that characterises the best examples of religious statuary from Trégor during the Age of Enlightenment.
