History
In Neydens, in the heart of the Genevois region of Haute-Savoie, the Verrières Cross stands where the roads cross, in keeping with the centuries-old tradition of consecrating every crossroads and natural border crossing with a sign of the cross. A discreet but meaningful monument, it embodies better than any other the daily spirituality of the rural populations of pre-revolutionary Savoie. This type of cross at a crossroads, closely linked to the geography of Alpine villages, fulfilled several functions at once: a beacon for lost travellers, a place of prayer for peasants setting off to work in the fields, a symbolic marker of protection against bad weather and the evil spirits that popular beliefs associated with road crossings. The Verrières Cross is fully in keeping with this heritage. Built in the last quarter of the eighteenth century - a period of great vitality for popular religious art in Savoie before the upheavals of the Revolution - the cross displays the formal characteristics typical of regional lapidary craftsmanship: a slender shaft resting on a masonry base, crowned by a cross-shaped Christ whose treatment bears witness to meticulous local craftsmanship. Architecture
The Verrières Cross is typical of Savoyard crossroads crosses from the late 18th century, combining formal sobriety with strong religious symbolism. It consists of a base made of cut stone - probably limestone or local molasse - with a square or rectangular plan, which ensures the stability of the whole on the crossroads. The base, slightly raised by steps, was used by the faithful to kneel on for prayer. A monolithic shaft with a quadrangular cross-section rises from this base, and its total height must have been around two to three metres, the usual proportion for this type of monument. The shaft may have simple mouldings or engraved votive inscriptions - date of foundation, initials of the sponsor(s), Latin formula or in Savoyard dialect - according to regional custom. The cross itself, placed at the top, houses a Christ on the Cross sculpted in the round or in bas-relief, the plastic treatment of which reveals the hand of a local stonemason trained in the Baroque traditions handed down by the workshops of the Geneva-Annecy diocese. The ensemble owes its uniqueness to the quality of its conservation and its setting in the Neydens landscape. The natural patina of the stone, the golden lichens and the mosses that partially colonise the edges of the base contribute to the authenticity of a monument that has remained in its original environment, without being moved or invasively restored - a rare balance among the wayside crosses of Haute-Savoie.
