A thousand-year-old sentinel of the Touraine hillsides, this fortified manor house reveals five centuries of living stone: a polygonal tower with machicolations, a Renaissance pavilion dating from 1560 and a mysterious underground passageway all coexist in a courtyard of rare authenticity.

Nestling in the heart of the Chinon vineyards, in the village of Cravant-les-Côteaux, the Vieux Château is a precious architectural palimpsest where each century has left its mark without erasing that of the previous one. Far from the grandiloquence of the most famous Loire châteaux, it offers a more intimate, rougher heritage experience, where the stone speaks directly to those who know how to listen. The rectangular courtyard, enclosed by an elegantly proportioned 16th-century porte cochère, forms the heart of the visit: a suspended space between the world of the living and that of the buried centuries. What makes this monument truly singular is the legible superimposition of its layers. In just a few steps, you move from the medieval foundations of a 13th-14th century tower to the sober lines of a 17th century main building, skirting a Renaissance pavilion with its spiral staircase tower. This inhabited continuity - the château was remodelled without interruption from the 15th to the 17th century - gives it a rare narrative coherence, that of a provincial gentleman's residence that evolves with the times without ever breaking with its roots. For visitors with a passion for archaeology or medieval history, the north-east corner of the courtyard holds a major surprise: a casemate opens onto a staircase leading to an underground passageway, probably a vestige of the defensive installations of the first occupants. The 15th-century polygonal tower, still partially crowned with its original machicolations, is a reminder that this manor house was originally a military structure before becoming a residence for pleasure. The natural setting enhances the charm of the place. Planted on the slopes of the Vienne, between tuff hollowed out by troglodytic caves and tightly packed rows of vines, the Vieux Château benefits from a typically Touraine landscape, where the golden light of spring afternoons transfigures the blond stones. Photographers and lovers of discreet heritage will find it an inexhaustible source of inspiration, far from the crowds that flock to Chambord or Azay-le-Rideau.
The architecture of the Vieux Château de Cravant perfectly illustrates the transition between the medieval fortified castle and the noble house of the Touraine Renaissance. The ensemble is organised around an enclosed rectangular courtyard, whose perimeter wall incorporates defensive features inherited from the 15th century - in particular the western polygonal tower, whose partially preserved machicolations are a reminder of the site's original military vocation. This tower, jutting out from the perimeter wall, adopts a polygonal plan typical of military architecture in the late Middle Ages in the Loire region, preferred to the circular plan for its more favourable firing angles. The main entrance is through a 16th-century gateway combining a carriage entrance and a wicket door, a sober but balanced composition that heralds the inner courtyard. On the western side of this courtyard, from north to south, are the ruins of the 15th-century dwelling, the 1560 pavilion flanked by its polygonal spiral staircase tower - a characteristic feature of the early Touraine Renaissance - and the 17th-century main building with its more classical lines. The outbuildings dating from the early 17th century, set back at right-angles to the north, complete the composition with simpler volumes. Tuffeau, a local limestone with blond hues that is easy to carve, is probably the dominant material, in keeping with the building tradition of the Vienne valley. The subsoil is not to be outdone: the casemate in the north-east corner, serving an underground network, bears witness to the defensive concerns that long governed the development of the site.
