Just outside Tréguier cathedral, this 15th-century former Augustinian convent combines a medieval cloister, Renaissance chapel and Baroque hospital wings - now transformed into an exceptional hotel-restaurant.
History
In the heart of Tréguier, a Breton episcopal town on the banks of the Jaudy, the former Augustinian convent is one of the best-preserved convent complexes in the Côtes-d'Armor region. Spanning seven centuries of history without ever losing its soul, this listed monument combines the sobriety of Breton granite with the architectural rigour of the religious communities of western France. Its age, attested to as early as the 13th century, gives it a rare historical depth that visitors feel as soon as they cross the threshold. What makes this building truly unique is the legible stratification of its architectural layers: the 14th-century medieval parlour sits alongside the 15th-century chapel of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, the 17th-century main building and the 19th-century additions. Each stone tells the story of an era, each gallery a function - care, prayer, teaching. The continuity of its charitable vocation, from the medieval Hôtel-Dieu to the 20th-century nursing home, gives the place a profoundly human coherence. Converted into a hotel-restaurant in 1990, the building offers an unusual visitor experience: sleep or dine in a seventeenth-century cloister, whose granite galleries frame a serene inner courtyard. The former conventual areas - refectory, novitiate, hospital rooms - have been restored with an eye to preserving their authenticity, to the delight of history buffs and lovers of fine homes alike. The Trégorrois setting enhances the charm of the place. Tréguier, the former capital of Trégor and birthplace of the philosopher Ernest Renan, is steeped in an unspoilt medieval atmosphere, dominated by its Gothic cathedral dedicated to Saint Tugdual. The Augustinian convent fits naturally into this setting of cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, just a stone's throw from the marina on the Jaudy.
Architecture
The architectural ensemble of the Augustinian convent forms a heterogeneous but coherent complex, built of Trégor granite - a grey stone with bluish reflections characteristic of northern Brittany - around an inner courtyard organised according to the classic conventual model. The medieval core includes the 14th-century parlour, a sober structure with thick walls pierced by pointed-arched windows, and the chapel of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, whose late 15th-century Gothic style is evident in the vaults and geometrically infilled openings. The large 17th-century main building, built between 1662 and 1663 at the instigation of the Augustinian nuns, forms the architectural heart of the complex. The cloister, whose granite-arched galleries frame a rectangular courtyard, reflects the functional austerity advocated by the Counter-Reformation: no superfluous ornamentation, but a geometric rigour that gives the space an undeniable contemplative beauty. The refectory and dormitories, adjoining the cloister galleries, retain their original proportions, which have since been adapted for hotel use. The 19th-century additions - the boarding school wing (1823) and the hospital (1853-1856) - are in the sober neo-classical style typical of the utilitarian Breton architecture of the July Monarchy and the Second Empire. The 1935 gallery, which joins the two main parts of the complex, adopts a discreet architectural language that favours continuity over stylistic statement. In this way, the ensemble forms a living architectural document, in which each building campaign remains legible without any abrupt break.
