Perched in the heart of the Quercy region, Château de Condat features two angled main buildings on the heights of Bouziès, revealing five centuries of Lot history between medieval vaulted cellars and a cylindrical dovecote.
History
Tucked away on the limestone plateaux of the Lot, between the meandering Célé and the ochre cliffs of the Lot valley, Château de Condat stands in Bouziès as a discreet but eloquent reminder of Quercy's seigniorial architecture. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1987, it belongs to that rare category of rural dwellings that have stood the test of time without losing their soul, their architectural layering being both composite and sincere. What makes Condat truly unique is that its history is immediately apparent in its very silhouette: two buildings set at right angles to each other, of different sizes, reveal a phased construction, a dialogue between the late Middle Ages and the more comfortable ambitions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The ensemble, clearly part of a larger initial programme, hints at wings that have disappeared, courtyards that may have been abandoned, projects that time or fortune have left in abeyance. On the ground floor, the cellars - one of which still has its beautiful barrel vault - are an invitation to take an underground journey into the daily life of the seigniors of yesteryear: food warehouses, places to keep cool during the scorching Quercy summers, discreet spaces where wine and provisions were kept. These preserved volumes offer lovers of medieval architecture a rare tactile experience, far removed from museum reconstructions. In the immediate vicinity of the château, a cylindrical dovecote completes the ensemble with an almost anachronistic presence in the landscape. A powerful symbol of the landed nobility under the Ancien Régime - only the lord had the right to a dovecote - this socially significant agricultural building remains in a remarkable state of preservation, and is in itself a heritage asset of the highest order. The natural setting amplifies the power of the place: Bouziès, nestling between cliffs and river, offers one of the most breathtaking panoramas of the Lot. Architecture
Château de Condat is composed of two main buildings set at right angles to each other, forming an L-shaped layout typical of provincial seigneurial architecture from the 15th to 18th centuries. The two volumes, of distinct heights and sizes, reflect the chronology of the building campaigns: the older wing, dating from the 15th century, retains Gothic features in its general structure, while the second body reveals the more sober inflections of the classical period. The whole building is made of Quercy limestone, the warm blonde stone that gives all the buildings in the region their distinctive sunny colour. The ground floor deserves particular attention: it is almost entirely taken up by cellars, one of which still has a beautiful barrel vault, a prime example of medieval Quercy masonry. These subterranean spaces, carved or built of carefully matched limestone rubble, reveal the technical mastery of local craftsmen in the early Middle Ages. The upper levels housed the lords' living quarters, in the vertical layout typical of medieval fortified dwellings. Immediately adjacent to the dwelling, the cylindrical dovecote is the most distinctive architectural feature of the complex. This free-standing tower, with its thick walls pierced with boulins (niches for pigeons to fly into), follows the dominant model in Quercy and Périgord: circular plan, pepperpot or conical roof and access through a low door. Its presence on the estate was both functional - producing pigeon pellets, a precious fertiliser - and symbolic, displaying the owner's noble status in the surrounding rural landscape.
