Manoir de Cleville, located in Le Rozel (Manche), is a Renaissance château built in the 16th century. The monument is currently closed to visitors.
Tucked away in the wild Cotentin region, Cléville Manor boasts Gothic-Renaissance lines set between the cliffs and the Normandy bocage - a gilded stone showcase of 15th-century seigniorial art.
In the heart of the Cap de Carteret, in one of the most unspoilt villages in the Cotentin region, the elegant silhouette of the Manoir de Cléville stands just a stone's throw from the shores of the English Channel. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1979, this manor house gracefully combines the last vestiges of the flamboyant Gothic style with the first efflorescences of the Norman Renaissance, providing a rare example of the architectural transition that characterised the second half of the 15th century. What sets Cléville apart from the surrounding manor houses is above all the coherence of its main structure: whereas many Norman residences from this period have been ruthlessly altered over the centuries, Cléville retains a precious architectural unity. The mullioned windows, arched bay windows and elaborate chimney stacks form an overall composition that speaks directly to the ambitions of those who commissioned it - a family of local nobility keen to mark their territory with stone. A visit to the manor house is an intimate experience, far removed from the crowds that invade the great châteaux of Normandy. Here, you take the time to observe the details: the quality of the cutting of the local granite, the sober ornamentation that distinguishes the architecture of the Cotentin from that of the more exuberant Pays d'Auge. At each opening, the attentive visitor can see the care taken to create the volumes - main dwelling, outbuildings, enclosed courtyard - typical of the manor farms of the peninsula. The natural setting amplifies the magic of the place. Le Rozel, a seaside town with a population of just a few hundred, is surrounded by unspoilt hedged farmland, with the manor house standing out like a point of gravity in the landscape. The rolling pastures, centuries-old hedges and immediate proximity to the Cotentin coastline, which is a nature reserve, make this visit a twofold discovery: that of a built heritage and that of an exceptional natural area.
The Manoir de Cléville is in the tradition of manor houses in the Cotentin region, characterised by the use of local granite - a hard, bluish-grey material that gives the buildings on the peninsula their distinguished austerity. The two-storey main building, with its steeply pitched slate roof, has an elongated plan typical of the second half of the 15th century in Normandy. The façades reflect the building's chronological duality: the earliest, Gothic sections feature pointed arches and monolithic lintels, while the 16th-century additions introduce pilastered dormers and basket-arched openings, discreet concessions to the Renaissance spirit. In addition to the main dwelling, the manorial complex includes farm outbuildings arranged around a semi-enclosed courtyard, a very common feature of middle-ranking Norman manor houses. The numerous, carefully-coursed chimney stacks bear witness to the care taken to ensure the comfort of the interior and allow us to reconstruct the layout of the reception rooms and seigneurial bedrooms. The bay modellations - cavet or baguette mouldings - are the work of skilled regional craftsmen, familiar with the ecclesiastical building sites in the Cotentin region. The sober elegance of Cléville lies in the balance between Norman rigour - no superfluous ornamentation, the primacy of stereotomy over decoration - and a measured openness to the innovations of the time. The manor house is a precious example of rural seigneurial architecture in the Cotentin region at the crossroads between the Middle Ages and modern times.
