Aux portes d'Angers, le château de Soucelles déploie l'élégance de l'Anjou classique : un ensemble recomposé au XVIIIe siècle autour d'un parc d'agrément et d'intérieurs d'une remarquable qualité décorative.
Nestling in the Anjou countryside just a few leagues from Angers, Château de Soucelles is one of those discreet jewels that make up the rich heritage of the Loire Valley. Listed as a Historic Monument since 2006, it brings together several centuries of architectural history in a single estate, from the original medieval core to the classical reconstruction of the 18th century, forming a coherent and serene whole. What really sets Soucelles apart is the exceptional quality of its interior décor, a rare testimony to the art of living of the Angevin nobility of the Enlightenment. Sculpted woodwork, elaborate fireplaces, delicate gypsum work and inlaid parquet flooring make up spaces where refinement vies with harmonious proportions - an interior that could easily be compared to the great neoclassical residences of the Loire Valley. The château is set in a park designed from 1772 onwards, when new owners set about remodelling the estate according to the canons of French taste of the time. Bridle paths, wooded areas and views of the gently undulating Baugeois countryside create a setting where architecture and nature are mutually supportive. Visitors with a keen interest in civil architecture will find plenty of food for thought here, from the well-ordered facades to the interior details that bear witness to the skills of Anjou's craftsmen and decorators during the late Grand Siècle and the Enlightenment. Soucelles is an invitation to slow down, far from the crowds that throng the great châteaux of the Loire.
Château de Soucelles has the silhouette characteristic of Anjou residences from the classical period: a main building with ordered facades, punctuated by regular spans of mullioned or small-paned windows depending on the phase of construction, flanked by outbuildings and outbuildings forming a coherent whole. The local materials - white Anjou tufa for the frames and quoins, combined with rendering on the masonry - give the elevations the warm, luminous hue so characteristic of Loire châteaux. The steeply pitched roofs, covered in blue-black Anjou slate, complete the setting in the region's architectural tradition. The interior is the real standout feature of the monument. The decoration campaign undertaken in the second half of the 18th century provided the reception rooms with extremely fine architectural furnishings: panelling with moulded panels, painted or carved door tops, herringbone parquet flooring, and marble or carved stone mantels whose shelves are decorated with scrolls and cartouches typical of the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. This ensemble is an exceptional example of the French provincial decorative art of the Enlightenment, and is all the more precious for having been spared subsequent alterations. The park harmoniously complements the architecture of the buildings: laid out according to the principles of the French garden, with its perspectives and orderly plant masses, it also incorporates landscape elements that reflect the evolution in tastes towards the English garden at the end of the 18th century.
