History
Standing on the western tip of a promontory overlooking the vineyards of Entre-Deux-Mers, Château de Puisseguin is one of the few surviving examples of Gascon defensive architecture from the late Middle Ages. Its silhouette, characterised by a main tower flanked by four turrets with cleverly designed layouts, immediately commands respect when set against the gentle undulations of the surrounding Bordeaux landscape. What really sets this château apart is the exceptional clarity of its architectural evolution: you can read in cross-section two centuries of fortification and seigniorial life. The original tower, massive and resolutely defensive, contrasts with the 17th-century main building adjoining it to the south, testifying to the gradual transition from fortress to prestigious residence. This dialogue between two eras gives the monument a rare historical density. A visit to the site also includes the seigniorial chapel, nestling at the western end of the outbuildings. The layout of Puisseguin castle is typical of early 14th-century Gascon military architecture, organised around a main square tower with two storeys over a ground floor, which forms the original core of the complex. The remarkable feature of this tower lies in the way its corners are treated: two square turrets rise from the ground, while two cylindrical corbelled turrets only rise from the first floor, creating a play of volumes and projections that enlivens the silhouette while providing flanking firing positions. This device, subtle in its defensive design, is representative of the know-how of the military engineers of the Duchy of Aquitaine under English domination. In the 17th century, a main building was built against the southern flank of the medieval tower, which was itself punctuated by square towers at its corners. This addition transformed the profile of the building without betraying its spirit: the sobriety of the elevations, the discreet modenature and the local materials - probably Périgord and Libourne limestone, characteristic of regional construction - ensure overall consistency between the two construction phases. Situated on the tip of a promontory, the enclosure is adapted to the topography and enclosed on the plateau side by a moat that was once crossed by a drawbridge. The seigniorial chapel, built at the end of the 15th century at the western end of the outbuildings, is the architectural jewel of the complex. Its finely-crafted late Gothic rib vault testifies to the quality of the work commissioned by the Lords of Monbadon. The vast bailey, framed by outbuildings, completes the picture of a fully constituted feudal estate, combining defensive, residential, agricultural and religious functions in a single coherent site.
