Nestling in the deep Lot, this 15th-century château boasts an elegant bracketed doorway and a square plan linked by a round tower - a rare example of late Gothic architecture under the influence of the Viscounts of Turenne.
History
In the heart of the Quercy region, in the discreet village of Mayrac, the château stands as a silent witness to the feudal power that shaped this region for centuries. Built in the second half of the 15th century, it soberly embodies the pivotal period when the late Gothic style gradually gave way to the first bold steps of the Renaissance. Its streamlined, proud silhouette is a natural fit with the Lot's characteristic blonde stone landscape. What immediately sets Mayrac château apart is the remarkable coherence of its architecture: two main buildings set at right angles to each other are built around a round, half-embedded tower, giving the whole a harmony that the centuries have not altered. The entrance, sheltered at the base of the tower, reveals some extremely fine stone-cutting - the brace above the door, the pediment with fleurons and the pilasters around the door bear witness to the care taken by craftsmen who had a perfect command of the decorative codes of their time. It is a perfect example of the decorative vocabulary of the Southern Flamboyant Gothic style: the jambs are finely moulded and rest on prismatic bases, while an accolade - an inverted pointed arch typical of the 15th century - crowns the opening. The pediment adorned with fleurons and the side pilasters add a touch of solemnity that betrays the patron's representative ambitions. Inside, the sculpted stone fireplaces are the main decorative features of the reception and living rooms. Crafted in the late Gothic style, they combine ample hoods, sculpted mantels and carved jambs, in a Quercy tradition that can be found in many contemporary homes in the region. The walls, probably made of local limestone in the warm colours typical of the Lot region, give the building that golden atmosphere so typical of Quercy's built heritage.
