A medieval outpost of the Château d'Aiguilhe, La Pierrière stands on a 13th-century rectangular plan in the heart of the Castillonnais region, enhanced by Renaissance windows and an inner courtyard that bears witness to five centuries of seigneurial life.
In the heart of the Castillonnais region, in the commune of Gardegan-et-Tourtirac, Château La Pierrière is a soberly elegant embodiment of the type of rural fortresses that dot the Gironde: edifices built not for magnificence, but for strategic necessity. Built at the end of the 13th century as a defensive outpost of the Château d'Aiguilhe, it retains a rare architectural coherence, combining the seriousness of the medieval plan with the discreet grace of the Gascon Renaissance. What distinguishes La Pierrière from a simple country manor house is the legibility of its evolution: the 13th-century walls still serve as the building's skeleton, while the 16th and 17th-century alterations introduced light - through the opening of mullioned and cross-headed windows - and comfort, with the creation of an inner courtyard that transformed the former fortress into a pleasure residence. This superimposition of historical layers makes it a veritable stone book, accessible to the attentive eye. A visit to the site immerses you in the seigneurial life of medieval and modern Bordeaux. You can see the logic of a coherent defensive network - the one that linked the outposts to the main castles - while savouring the calm of an architecture that has returned to its intimate dimension. Lovers of ashlar and ancient masonry will find much to admire here. The surrounding countryside, typical of the Côtes de Bordeaux-Saint-Émilion vineyards, adds an incomparable landscape dimension to the visit. The gentle hills, the rows of vines and the silence of the Gironde countryside form a backdrop that reminds us that these châteaux were not just instruments of war or power, but also centres of agrarian life. La Pierrière, listed as a Historic Monument since 2015, now enjoys the heritage recognition it deserves.
The architecture of Château La Pierrière is based on a rectangular plan inherited from the late 13th century, typical of the military outposts of the medieval Bordeaux region. The load-bearing walls, built of blond limestone quarried locally, bear witness to a solid, functional construction, with no superfluous ornamentation: the austerity of the medieval fortress is still palpable in the thickness of the masonry and the paucity of original openings. A few preserved 14th-century bays, with slightly pointed or round arches, confirm the age of the shell. The alterations carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries profoundly changed the original layout without altering it. The new openings, cut into the medieval walls, adopted the forms in vogue during the Renaissance: stone mullions and transoms, moulded frames and more slender proportions. These openings contrast with the sobriety of the old walls, creating a stylistic dialogue characteristic of Gironde châteaux of the period. The addition of a further building to close off the inner courtyard follows the model of the manor house organised around an enclosed courtyard, typical of French provincial classicism. Today, the ensemble is a coherent testimony to the architectural evolution of a rural manor house over four centuries. The roof, probably made of flat tiles or canal tiles in the Gironde tradition, crowns simple but balanced volumes. The building's position on a gentle slope gave it a dominant position over the surrounding land, an original military advantage that is now combined with its undeniable scenic appeal.
