Standing on the banks of the Creuse River, the Château de La Guerche displays its Gothic-Renaissance facades between the cobbled courtyard and the river. Its Villequier main building, whose foundations plunge into the very bed of the Creuse, is an architectural feat without equal in Touraine.

History
At the crossroads of the Touraine and Berry regions, where the river Creuse shimmers beneath the ramparts, the Château de La Guerche has been imposing its haughty silhouette since the 15th century. Built on the initiative of the Lords of Villequier in the second half of the century, this castral complex is one of the most distinctive examples of the transition between medieval military architecture and the refinement of the pre-Renaissance period in the Loire Valley. What sets La Guerche apart above all is the boldness of its layout. The west wing - known as the "corps de logis Villequier" - rises thirty metres by literally sinking its foundations into the bed of the Creuse, resting on two levels of superimposed casemates. This feat of engineering, rare for its time, gives the building a striking verticality that can be appreciated from the opposite bank, where the château seems to be rising out of the water itself. The tour reveals two wings arranged at right angles around an inner courtyard measuring around forty metres on each side. The entrance châtelet, facing the bridge and the village, marks the threshold between the ordinary world and this world apart. The Aumont wing, which was carefully restored in the early 20th century, has preserved the character of its rooms, where architectural details such as mouldings, window frames and monumental fireplaces deserve special attention. The landscaped grounds, planted around 1830-1831, envelop everything in a romantic atmosphere. Its shady paths invite you to take a stroll and offer well-designed views of the château's facades, in the tradition of English-style gardens that reached their apogee under the Restoration. It's an ideal setting for photographers in search of framed shots combining stone and lush vegetation. Far from the hustle and bustle of the major tourist circuits of the Loire, La Guerche offers an authentic and intimate experience, that of a living monument that has weathered the centuries between seigniorial glory, revolutionary destruction and meticulous rebirth.
Architecture
Château de La Guerche belongs to the great family of late Loire châteaux, built in the transition between the flamboyant Gothic style and the early influences of the Italian Renaissance. The original layout revolved around a square courtyard measuring around forty metres on each side, framed by four wings, of which only two remain. The angled layout of the surviving buildings is reminiscent of the great seigneurial residences of the 15th century, which were concerned with both defence and representation. The west wing, or corps de logis Villequier, is the centrepiece of the complex. Its thirty-metre elevation, anchored in the bed of the Creuse by two levels of superimposed casemates, testifies to a remarkable technical mastery for its time. This bold solution gave the river façade an almost defensive verticality, punctuated by mullioned windows and horizontal string courses characteristic of the late Gothic style. The south wing, comprising the entrance châtelet and the corps de logis d'Aumont, has a more horizontal profile, facing the village and the mouth of the bridge over the Creuse. The entrance châtelet, dating from the 1450s, retains defensive features inherited from medieval tradition - flanking towers, archways, sober modenature - while the main buildings already display a concern for comfort and elegance typical of late medieval homes. Carved fireplaces, moulded window surrounds and geometric vaulting all contribute to the refined atmosphere of these interiors, which were preserved during the restoration work carried out in the early 20th century.
