Nestling in the vineyards of Bayon-sur-Gironde, on the heights overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Falfas is one of those monuments that reveals itself slowly, as your gaze lingers on its stones. Listed as a Historic Monument since 2008, this seventeenth-century ensemble boasts an architectural coherence that is rare in the region, where so many noble residences have suffered the ravages of time or untimely alterations. What really sets Falfas apart are its interior facades, which are remarkably finely sculpted. The brackets supporting the lintels of the mullioned windows feature strikingly expressive human masks and faces - some grimacing, others pensive - recalling the vogue for grotesques that ran through French art from the late Renaissance to the Grand Siècle. The brace over the entrance door, both a defensive and decorative element, lends the castle a seigniorial dignity that few castles of its size can still claim. The very layout of the château, with its rectangular main building flanked by two square pavilions arranged diagonally - to the north-east and south-west - creates an original spatial dynamic. This volumetric layout, which is less rigid than the U- or H-shaped plan of the great classical residences, bears witness to an architectural personality of its own, perhaps inherited from the topographical constraints of the hillside or the particular taste of the patron. The interior façades are the focus of most of the decorative interest. The entrance door, framed by pilasters or plain mouldings, is topped by a brace - a rare feature on buildings of this scale - which combines symbolic defensive function with architectural ornament. The mullioned windows, characteristic of the French building tradition of the 16th and 17th centuries, retain their stone lattice work; their lintels rest on finely sculpted brackets depicting masks and human faces whose expressiveness evokes the influence of Italian grotesques and the Fontainebleau school.
