History
Nestling in the bocage of the Périgord region, a few leagues from Périgueux, Château d'Escoire discreetly and elegantly embodies the neoclassical taste that flourished in the Dordogne at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Far from the grandiloquence of the great residences of the Loire Valley, it reveals a sober, almost intimate refinement that bears witness to a strong architectural culture and a remarkable mastery of composition. What really sets Escoire apart is the skilful articulation of its main façade: a long horizontal line punctuated by pavilions with triangular pediments, interrupted at its centre by a half-moon exedra from which three arched doors open. This arrangement, rare in Périgord rural architecture, gives the building an unexpected scenic depth, playing with light and volumes according to the time of day. The double spiral staircase is undoubtedly the most spectacular feature of the whole. This projecting exedra, pierced by three arched doors side by side, deliberately breaks with the monotony of a rectilinear façade and creates a focal point of great scenic elegance. The corner pavilions, crowned with triangular pediments, are reminiscent of the principles of Palladian composition, where the forebays emphasise the ends of the building to balance its length. The double spiral staircase - whose two symmetrical flights converge on a central landing - is a rare feature in regional rural architecture: it serves both the side terraces and the central balcony, orchestrating an architectural promenade between interior and exterior that is the signature of the great pleasure houses of the consular and imperial periods.
