The Château de La Rochepot is a fortified castle in the Gothic-Burgundian style, dating from the twelfth century, remodelled in the fifteenth century, and entirely rebuilt in the nineteenth century using the glazed tiles of Bourgogne. It stands in La Rochepot, some fifteen kilometres to the south-west of Beaune.

Rising above the village of La Rochepot like a crown set upon stone, this château of Bourgogne captivates from the very first glance with the dazzling polychromy of its glazed tile rooftops — yellow, black, red and green — the absolute hallmark of great Burgundian artistry. Flanked by round towers crowned with pepper-pot turrets and girded by a moat, the edifice embodies, in and of itself, the romantic ideal of the medieval fortress, weaving together the authenticity of its origins with the bold vision of a nineteenth-century restoration pursued with uncommon passion. What makes La Rochepot truly singular is the coherence of its architectural ensemble: the château presents itself not as a collection of disparate fragments, but as a masterfully composed whole, in which towers, curtain walls, drawbridge and wall-walk answer one another in perfect harmony. The interior, furnished and decorated with great care, offers a journey through time across Gothic halls where monumental fireplaces, Flemish tapestries and collections of arms evoke the splendour of a great seigneurial household. The guided tour reveals spaces of remarkable scenic quality: the guards' room with its pointed Gothic vaulting, the castle chapel adorned with medieval wall paintings, the faithfully reconstructed medieval kitchens with their imposing array of original equipment. Each room tells a story; each detail betrays the eye of an owner devoted to restoring the atmosphere of an authentic noble way of life. The natural setting only deepens the enchantment of the place. The château nestles within the rolling landscape of the Burgundian côte, between classified vineyards and oak forests, just a few kilometres from the celebrated Route des Grands Crus. The view from the wall-walk across the surrounding countryside — the rooftops of the village below, the wooded horizons stretching into the distance — is, in itself, reason enough to make the ascent. Photographers will be well rewarded by the golden late-afternoon light that sets the polychrome tiles ablaze with an almost otherworldly brilliance.
The Château de La Rochepot belongs to the tradition of fifteenth-century Burgundian military architecture, with a concentric plan organised around an inner courtyard. The enclosure, defended by several round towers fitted with arrow slits, is approached by a drawbridge — today carefully restored — that remains one of the most picturesque features of the ensemble. The walls, built from the local limestone rubble so characteristic of the Côte-d'Or, display a warm golden hue that contrasts magnificently with the polychrome splendour of the rooftops. The château's most striking visual signature lies in its glazed tile roofs, arranged in multicoloured diamond patterns — yellow, green, red and brown — a technique inherited from Burgundian Romanesque art and brought to its zenith in Dijon and the great monuments of the region. The steeply pitched rooflines are crowned with weathervanes and turrets that accentuate the vertical silhouette of the whole, visible from the plain for several kilometres around. Within, the arrangement of the spaces reflects the typical organisation of a late-medieval seigneurial residence: grand reception halls vaulted with Gothic ribbing, a castle chapel adorned with paintings on plasterwork, kitchens equipped with monumental roasting fireplaces, and lordly chambers whose mullioned windows open onto the surrounding countryside. The nineteenth-century restorations succeeded in preserving the medieval spirit of the volumes, whilst incorporating furnishings and decorative elements selected with careful attention to their historical coherence.
