The interior staircase is the château's crowning architectural achievement: departing from the traditional spiral form, it embraces the straight-flight design with open flights, its coffered ceiling sculpted with salamanders and ermines — emblems of François Ier and of Queen Claude — alongside figures drawn from antiquity. Within, the principal rooms retain their painted coffered ceilings, monumental chimneypieces and aged parquet floors, together composing a remarkably coherent ensemble that illuminates the art of living as practised by the French elite at the dawn of the sixteenth century.
