History
Nestling in the heart of the Gâtinais region, at Augerville-la-Rivière, the castle's four medieval corner towers stand like sentinels of an exceptional seigniorial past. Originally a fortified castle, surrounded by a moat that testified to its defensive ambitions, it has evolved over the centuries into an aristocratic residence without ever renouncing its warrior foundations. Architectural enthusiasts will find it a veritable palimpsest of stone, where each era has inscribed its signature. What makes this truly singular monument is first and foremost its roots in France's highest history: Jacques Cœur, Charles VII's great treasurer and an emblematic figure of medieval patronage, owned it in the 15th century. The massive towers that frame the main building still bear the imprint of that fascinating period, when France was reborn from the Hundred Years' War. The fact that monarchs such as Louis XI, Henri IV and Louis XIII chose to stop here speaks volumes about the prestige of the place. The tour takes in a succession of architectural styles: the moat is still there, inviting us to imagine the vanished drawbridge; the rectangular main building is topped by an imposing French-style roof with ornate 16th-century stone dormer windows; and the 17th-century outbuildings frame the entrance to the estate with sobriety. The dovecote is a discreet masterpiece in its own right: its interior revolving framework on a pivot, giving access to all the cells, is still in working order - an absolute rarity in France. The setting remains intimate and unspoilt. The grounds, which open onto the rear façade of the château, were altered in the twentieth century, but retain the serenity typical of the great residences of the Loiret region. Far from the crowds that besiege the Loire Valley's great châteaux, Augerville-la-Rivière offers a privileged face-to-face encounter with several centuries of French history, in an almost complicit silence.
Architecture
Augerville-la-Rivière castle has a massive rectangular plan, inherited from medieval defensive systems. The four corner towers, with their slightly heeled square bases, date back mainly to Jacques Cœur's intervention in the 15th century and give the castle its austere, powerful silhouette. Part of the moat that once encircled the entire château remains, a reminder of its original purpose as a fortress. The platform on which the main building rests retains its original dimensions, which are impressive by Gâtinais castle standards. The main building is rectangular in plan, with a projecting forebuilding on the façade that breaks the monotony of the elevation and marks the main entrance. It is crowned by a large French-style roof, characterised by its straight, steep slopes, pierced with finely-moulded stone-framed dormer windows dating from the 16th century - an ornamental vocabulary that betrays the influence of the royal building sites in the Loire on the residences of the Gâtinais region. The facade overlooking the parklands, remodelled in the 20th century, is more sober in character. The 17th-century outbuildings, arranged on either side of the entrance to the estate, form a coherent ensemble of local ashlar in pale shades, typical of the classical rural architecture of the Loiret region. The dovecote is the technical jewel in the crown: a functional cylindrical or square building, it still has its interior framework mounted on a central pivot - an ingenious mechanical system that enabled the dovecote owner to reach all the boulins (cells) simply by turning the revolving ladder, without moving the base.
