History
Perched on a limestone promontory overlooking both the old town and the turquoise waters of the lake, Annecy castle is much more than a fortress: it is a composite palace where each century has left its signature. The imposing silhouette of the castle, with its crenellated towers and mullioned dwellings, is reflected in the waters of the Thiou and is the architectural emblem of the whole of Haute-Savoie. What makes this monument truly unique is the superposition of two great building ambitions: the military rigour of the Counts of Geneva in the Middle Ages, who erected a formidable defensive system, and the skilful elegance of the Dukes of Savoy in the Renaissance, who transformed a stronghold into a princely residence. Architecture
Annecy castle is a composite complex built around a central courtyard in a high position, surrounded by a wall with circular and square towers typical of 12th-13th century medieval military architecture. The "Queen's Tower", a cylindrical keep with walls over a metre thick, is the focal point and the oldest witness to the site. Its local limestone rubble masonry, barely softened by a few strips of ashlar, bears witness to the functional and austere aesthetic of the medieval builders. The contrast with the Renaissance buildings is striking. The Logis Nemours, built in the second half of the 16th century, introduces a resolutely new vocabulary: moulded stone mullioned windows, a columned gallery with semi-circular arches showing a clear Lombard influence, and steeply pitched roofs topped with the dark slate typical of the Alpine region. The interior facades of this dwelling are punctuated by a succession of regular bays that bear witness to a new spatial concept, with an emphasis on order and light. The rocky spur layout means that the building has multiple levels, linked by stone spiral staircases built into the corner towers. This constraining topography gave rise to some inventive architectural solutions, notably the buttresses linking the towers to the rock and the barrel vaults supporting the floors of the cantilevered rooms. The dominant materials - light-coloured limestone extracted from the surrounding quarries and rubble of local volcanic tuff - give the whole structure a golden hue that is particularly photogenic in the golden hours.
