Nestling in the Brech countryside on the outskirts of Auray, the chapel of Saint-Quirin is a gentle anomaly in the Breton landscape: where other rural chapels display Gothic pinnacles and tormented granite, this one imposes a classical restraint, inherited directly from the aesthetics of the Grand Siècle. Built in 1676 for the Kerivallan manor house, it belongs to a small family of monuments that chose reason over exuberance. What immediately sets Saint-Quirin apart is the coherence of its architectural style. The rectangular plan, the flat apse, the door framed by a well-designed cornice, the niche topped by a circular oculus - all these elements bear witness to a cultured patron, attentive to Parisian fashions while at the same time respecting local tradition. Nothing is ostentatious, everything is measured. The building also reveals its historical depth in its constructional contradictions: the five-sided sacristy, added after the initial construction, shows that this chapel was alive for a long time, maintained and transformed according to the needs of a rural community that did not abandon it to decoration alone. The chapel of Saint-Quirin is one of the very few rural chapels in Brittany to adopt a French classical vocabulary, in a clear break with the regional Gothic tradition. Its plan is rectangular, simple and legible, with no transept or ambulatory: a single nave and a flat apse - a typically classical choice, favouring geometric rigour over medieval expressiveness. A five-sided sacristy is attached to this main volume, a later addition that can be seen in the different treatment of the masonry. The west gable is the main façade and the most accomplished piece of architecture in the building. It features a rectangular door surmounted by a moulded cornice that marks the entrance with sober dignity. Above, a niche - probably intended to house a statue of Saint Quirin - is crowned by an oculus, a circular window borrowed from classical and Baroque vocabulary, which adds light and rhythm to the composition. The overall effect is more reminiscent of the architecture of western France, influenced by the Beaux-Arts of Paris, than of the jagged facades of Breton parish enclosures. The square bell tower towers over the building with calculated discretion, ending in a small spire that ensures the verticality of the silhouette without excess. The materials used are those of the region - local granite makes up the bulk of the masonry - but their application obeys a formal discipline that clearly distinguishes Saint-Quirin from its contemporaries. The interior, which is modest in size, was originally intended to be decorated in keeping with the classical character of the architecture, probably with wood panelling, a columned altar and a few works of piety typical of the seigniorial chapels of the Grand Siècle.
