Nestling in the heart of Kreiz Breizh, Notre-Dame de Rosquelfen chapel reveals a rare medieval rood screen and an intact parish enclosure, silent witnesses to seven centuries of Breton devotion.
At the bend in a sunken lane in the Côtes-d'Armor region, Notre-Dame de Rosquelfen chapel stands in its parish enclosure, as if suspended in time. Far from the main tourist routes, this building in Laniscat belongs to that category of discreet monuments whose historical depth far exceeds the apparent simplicity of the façade. Listed as a Monument Historique in 2014, it is the perfect embodiment of Breton rural religious heritage in all its coherence: chapel, cemetery and enclosure form an indissociable whole, mirroring a village community organised around its faith. What distinguishes Rosquelfen from a simple country chapel is above all the richness of its interior furnishings. The building still has an old rood screen - the stone fence that separated the choir reserved for the clergy from the nave for the faithful - which has been reinstalled in the southern chapel. Today, rood screens are one of the rarest elements of French religious heritage: the Revolution destroyed the vast majority of them. The Rosquelfen rood screen, modest but intact, is an exceptional testimony to medieval liturgy and the art of Breton lapicide. The experience of visiting the site is one of intimate discovery. Visitors enter a space on a human scale, where light filters soberly through narrow windows, revealing the texture of the granite and the patina of the centuries. The elongated floor plan with its single nave invites you to stroll slowly from the entrance porch to the flat chevet, passing under the gaze of the titular Virgin, whose cult has undoubtedly endured since the early Middle Ages. The adjoining enclosure and cemetery extend the open-air visit. These enclosed spaces, typical of Breton parishes, tell the spiritual and social story of the rural communities of Kreiz Breizh. The ancient funerary crosses, low mossy granite walls and contained vegetation give the site a rare atmosphere of contemplation, conducive to meditation as much as photography.
Notre-Dame de Rosquelfen chapel has an elongated plan with a single nave, typical of rural Breton chapels of the late Middle Ages. The chevet is flat, an architectural sobriety characteristic of the Breton Gothic style, which favoured simplicity over the spatial complexity of the great cathedrals. Three separate elements are grafted onto the main nave: a side chapel (probably in the south), an entrance porch and a bell tower-porch, all of which bear witness to the different phases of construction that took place between the 14th and 17th centuries. Granite, an omnipresent stone in the Laniscat region, is the dominant building material, giving the building its characteristic grey colour and robustness. The most remarkable interior feature is undoubtedly the former rood screen, preserved in the southern chapel. This architectural enclosure - a sculpted stone slab or archway - traditionally separated the liturgical choir from the nave. Its reinstallation in the side chapel during the 17th-century alterations gave it a secondary ornamental and devotional role. The rarity of these elements in France makes them a major piece of the building's furnishings. The belfry-porch, set against the west or side facade, is in the tradition of Breton belfry-towers with arches, serving both as a belfry and as a monumental entrance portal. The parish enclosure surrounding the chapel completes the architectural ensemble. Surrounded by granite walls, it houses the historic cemetery with its ancient crosses and headstones. This enclosed space, a direct legacy of medieval and modern parish organisation, is in itself an architectural and landscaping testimony of the utmost importance, inseparable from the chapel that it protects and enhances.
