History
At the bend in a sunken lane in the Landudal countryside in Cornouaille, Notre-Dame de Populo chapel rises up with the quiet majesty typical of buildings that have stood the test of time without ever losing their soul. Built in the second quarter of the 16th century, it belongs to that great tradition of Breton rural chapels which, far from being mere oratories, were veritable centres of community and spiritual life for the scattered parishes of Finistère. What immediately sets Notre-Dame de Populo apart from its sister chapels is the quality and scale of its flamboyant windows. The windows in the transept and chevet arms, with their elaborate bellows and spandrels, flood the interior with golden light that dances on the local granite stones. This luminous treatment, rarely seen in such detail in a country chapel, testifies to the aesthetic ambitions of its patrons and the skills of 16th-century Breton stonemasons. The Latin cross plan gives the building an architectural rigour worthy of the finest chapels in Cornwall. The three-sided chevet, enclosed by three soberly carved gables, creates a beautifully coherent exterior silhouette. The three-sided apse, enclosed by an equal number of gables, is one of the chapel's most remarkable features. This polygonal solution, an intermediary between the semi-circular apse and the straight enclosure, is common in Brittany and lends a particular plastic tension to the eastern end of the building. The windows are the most spectacular feature of the architecture. The flamboyant windows in the arms of the transept and the chevet are unusually large for a rural chapel: their elaborate infills, with their bellows, speckles and trefoils interlocked in the late Gothic style, let in an abundance of light, transforming the interior into a space of great luminous quality. These openings bear witness to a stonemason's workshop that perfectly mastered the techniques of the flamboyant Breton Gothic style. The bell tower, extensively remodelled in the 18th century, introduces a fascinating temporal dialogue with the Gothic body of the chapel. Its lantern dome, inspired by the classical and baroque vocabulary disseminated by architecture manuals and the achievements of major cities, breaks with the verticality of the Gothic spires to adopt a softer, brighter form. The whole structure was probably built from local granite, a material that is omnipresent in the Finistère architectural landscape, giving the chapel its characteristic grey hue while ensuring exceptional durability in the harsh Breton climate.
