Nestling in the quiet countryside of Guénin, in the heart of Morbihan, Notre-Dame-de-Manéguen chapel is one of those discreet gems of Breton heritage that you discover with a mixture of surprise and wonder. Far from the grandiloquence of cathedrals, it embodies the popular faith and craftsmanship of the Compagnons de Bretagne of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, brought together here in a remarkably coherent whole. What immediately sets Notre-Dame-de-Manéguen apart is the rarity of some of its architectural choices. The north end of the transept has a polygonal plan, which is almost unique among Breton rural chapels. This detail, which could have gone unnoticed, betrays the presence of ambitious and cultured builders, attentive to the formal developments of their time. The belfry crowning the west gable, topped with a finely sculpted frieze, completes this striking initial portrait. Inside, the panelled roof structure is the highlight of the visit. The sculpted eaves of the nave bear the date 1577, carved into the wood like an oath to eternity. The woodwork in the transept, dated 1604, reveals the continuity of a project that was painstakingly carried out over several decades. Notre-Dame-de-Manéguen has a simple Latin cross plan, with a single nave with no aisles, a transept and a sacristy in place of a chevet. This sobriety of plan contrasts with the richness of the interior and exterior decoration, in keeping with a principle dear to Breton religious art: concentrating ornamental effort on symbolically strong elements rather than diluting the expense by multiplying the volumes. On the outside, the western gable immediately catches the eye, with its sculpted frieze and belfry, typical of rural chapels in Morbihan. The whole structure is built from local granite, the preferred material of Breton builders, which is both robust and well-suited to fine sculpture. A low stone wall surrounds the building, perpetuating a tradition of sacred enclosure that is unique to Brittany and similar in spirit to the parish enclosures of Finistère. Inside, the panelled roof timbers are the architectural centrepiece. Those of the nave (1577) and transept (1604) feature finely sculpted runners, testimony to the talent of local carpenters.
