History
Nestling in the Trégor region, in Pommerit-le-Vicomte, the Chapelle du Paradis is one of those Breton buildings that time seems to have spared with particular benevolence. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1912, it alone embodies the continuity of a religious architectural tradition that flourished in Brittany between the 15th and 16th centuries, in the countryside that was then under the control of local seigneuries jealous of their identity. What immediately sets the Chapelle du Paradis apart is its status as a complete and virtually intact witness to a bygone era. Where so many other rural chapels have undergone successive alterations, disparate additions or partial destruction, this one retains most of its volumetric integrity and original character. Its simple rectangular plan, typical of private or parish devotional buildings in the region, gives it a sobriety that does not exclude elegance. It is inseparable from its monumental calvary, a moving vestige of a former cemetery that no longer exists. Of the original calvary, only the base remains, but what a base it is: its sides are adorned with the twelve sculpted apostles, a silent stone procession that spans the centuries with striking dignity. These figures, in their characteristic Breton style combining hieraticism and humanity, are in themselves an exceptional document of regional religious statuary from the Renaissance. The Chapelle du Paradis is an exemplary example of the architectural style of Breton rural chapels from the 15th to 16th century. Local granite, a material that is omnipresent in the buildings of the Trégor region, is used to create the walls in their characteristic grey hue, which turns golden in the evening light. On the outside, the side bays, although missing their original mullions, still reveal the soberly moulded arches and jambs typical of Breton late Gothic architecture. The gable roof would originally have been covered in slate, the material of choice for Breton roofers since the Middle Ages. The porch, if there is one, is in the tradition of sculpted portals that signal the entrance to the sacred space. The calvary is the most remarkable architectural element from a sculptural point of view. Its base, the only surviving part, features the twelve apostles in bas-relief or in partial relief - an iconographic programme of unparalleled richness. These figures, carved in granite with the precision of local Breton Renaissance workshops, bear witness to a high level of craftsmanship, comparable to that seen in the large parish enclosures in neighbouring Finistère. The frieze-like arrangement of the apostles around the base creates a composition of great plastic coherence.
