Around the bend in the hamlet of Les Plans, on the outskirts of the village of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, the chapel stands out in the landscape as a matter of course: a small white silhouette topped by its bulb, it has been in dialogue with the mountain pastures and peaks of Mont-Blanc for three centuries. In this valley of the Mont-Blanc massif, near Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, the building is one of the best-preserved examples of Savoyard popular religious architecture from the first half of the 18th century, at a time when mountain communities vied with each other to provide their hamlets with their own place of worship. What sets the Les Plans chapel apart is precisely its intimate scale. Designed for the hamlet's inhabitants rather than for an entire parish, the chapel doesn't seek grandeur but density: every centimetre of its modest interior seems inhabited, with its sculpted altarpieces, ex-votos and Baroque polychromy. The devotion of successive generations can be read there like a palimpsest, layer after layer.
