Nichée dans les landes du Morbihan, la chapelle de Locmeltro conjugue plan en croix latine, porte en plein cintre et un environnement exceptionnel où se côtoient fontaine à pignon, borne romaine et croix du XVIIIe siècle.
In the heart of the commune of Guern, in inland Morbihan, the chapel of Locmeltro is one of those discreet buildings that Brittany knows so well how to hide in its landscapes of moorland and hedged farmland. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1976, it is the embodiment of several centuries of Breton popular devotion and religious art, with a sobriety that commands respect. What makes Locmeltro truly special is not so much the chapel itself as the heritage complex that accompanies it. A few steps from its walls, a fountain with a triangular gable - a typical architectural feature of Breton devotional fountains - offers a rural elegance. A Roman military milestone, a silent reminder of the ancient presence in this region crossed by Gallo-Roman roads, stands alongside a stone cross dated 1743, a reminder that this place was a spiritual and human crossroads for a long time. The interior of the chapel is sober and restrained, revealing the layers of time: an ancient nave with weathered stonework, a transept and apse rebuilt in the 19th century but preserving bays with proportions inherited from an earlier state. These architectural replacements give Locmeltro a rare texture, where each stone tells the story of an intervention, a restoration, a desire to perpetuate the sacred. The tour lends itself to a slow, contemplative stroll. The attentive visitor will be able to make out the differences in the masonry between the original nave and the rebuilt sections, read the eighteenth-century imprint in the round-headed windows, and will be happy to stop in front of the remains of the ossuary that once leaned against the north wall - evidence of a funerary practice that has now disappeared but was for a long time central to Breton parish life. The natural setting amplifies the experience: the chapel, isolated in an unspoilt rural setting, is bathed in a silence that is disturbed only by the wind in the broom. For photographers and lovers of rural heritage, it's a must-see stop-off on your way to the heart of Morbihan.
The chapel at Locmeltro has a Latin cross plan, a traditional feature of western religious architecture that Breton builders of the 17th and 18th centuries were happy to perpetuate in rural buildings. The single nave, with its narrow nave, opens to the west through a semi-circular doorway, typical of the classical vocabulary used in inland Brittany in the 18th century. A semi-circular window pierces the south wall of the nave, providing a sober and functional side light. The transept and apse, which were rebuilt in the 19th century, still have bays from an earlier period. This coexistence of styles and periods can be seen in the masonry: the local stone, probably granite or schist depending on the availability of quarries in Morbihan, has slightly different colours and textures in different parts of the building. The apse, with its flat or slightly polygonal plan, completes the ensemble with the sobriety characteristic of Breton rural chapels. The building complex also includes the remains of the ossuary leaning against the north wall of the nave - now reduced to a few stone courses - and above all the triangular gabled fountain, whose elegant silhouette bears witness to the care taken over the devotional arrangements around the chapel. The Roman military milestone, either replaced or simply preserved in situ, is an exceptional lapidary feature that sets this site apart from other rural chapels in Morbihan.
