In the heart of a vast wooded estate on the outskirts of Bordeaux, the Charles Perrens specialist hospital - affectionately known as "Château-Picon" by the people of Bordeaux - stands out as one of the most coherent and best-preserved psychiatric complexes in France. Designed at the crossroads of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it embodies an era when psychiatric medicine dreamt of therapeutic architecture: each stone, each gallery, each pavilion was to contribute to healing the soul as much as caring for the body. What makes the site truly exceptional is the legibility of its layout. Walking through the long central gallery - the backbone of the establishment - visitors immediately understand the logic of the double comb: twelve pavilions are attached perpendicularly, three by three, on either side, their height decreasing from the centre to the periphery according to the presumed seriousness of the pathologies housed. This spatial hierarchy, devised by the head doctor in consultation with the architect, has no clear equivalent in France. The attentive visitor will discover a series of buildings with precise functions and varied silhouettes: the tower of the baths pavilion, reminiscent of a medieval keep, stands opposite the chapel in a striking architectural dialogue; the large administrative building asserts the rigour of the entrance; the residential houses of the managers punctuate the estate with a touch of residential life. The whole complex forms a truly autonomous village, closed in on itself, both enclosed and orderly. Still in operation today as a psychiatric hospital, the Perrens centre is not open to the public, but its facades, gardens and central gallery can be seen during cultural events and heritage days. The architecture of the Charles Perrens centre is part of the eclectic trend of the late 19th century, tinged with medieval historicism - a direct legacy of Valleton's training with Paul Abadie, the great restorer of Gothic cathedrals and neo-Romanesque architecture. The overall layout, known as the "double comb", is the most remarkable feature of the site: a long central gallery arranged rigorously on either side to perpendicular pavilions, three by three, which gradually decrease in height as you move away from the centre. This organisation, which can be seen from the ground plans, reflects both medical thinking and constructive logic. The most spectacular architectural feature is the tower of the general baths pavilion, whose medieval castle-like profile contrasts with the sobriety of the other buildings. This tower, visible from several points on the estate, echoes the chapel it faces to the north, creating a symbolic axis between the care of the body and that of the soul. The large administrative building, which marks the main entrance, has an ordered façade that is both severe and representative of the public institutions of the Third Republic. The dwellings of the medical officers, scattered around the grounds, have a more domestic massing, with gambrel roofs and bourgeois modelling. The materials used - local limestone ashlar, hollow tiles and structural brick - are in keeping with Gironde building traditions.
