Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Blavet Gorge, the Toul-Goulic protohistoric camp reveals the impressive remains of a fortified Neolithic oppidum, a silent witness to a Brittany five millennia old.
In the heart of the Côtes-d'Armor region, in the commune of Trémargat, the Toul-Goulic protohistoric camp stands out as one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Armorican Massif. Established on a natural promontory overlooking the deep gorges of the Blavet, this camp bears witness to an ancient human occupation and an astonishing mastery of the land from the Neolithic period onwards. The very topography of the site reveals the strategic genius of its builders: the rocky spur, protected on several sides by peaks and the river below, offered a virtually impregnable defensive position. What sets Toul-Goulic apart from the many other protohistoric sites in Brittany is the rare combination of an exceptional natural configuration and deliberate human intervention. The earthen embankments and levees that complete the natural defence of the promontory still mark out the landscape as the outlines of an organised community, capable of mobilising a considerable workforce to erect these collective works. There are several similar camps in inland Brittany, but few benefit from such a well-preserved natural setting. The visitor experience is first and foremost a sensory immersion in a timeless wilderness. The Blavet gorges, listed as one of the most beautiful in Brittany, surround the site in dense vegetation where moorland, ferns and sessile oaks form a backdrop that has remained virtually unchanged since the age of the first clearings. Visitors walk along stony paths, gradually discovering the artificial reliefs that contrast with the existing rock, the bulges of earth that were once living ramparts. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1965, the Toul-Goulic camp is protected but freely accessible, giving it an authentic character that lacks the sometimes artificial scenography of the major tourist sites. Here, the visitor's imagination does all the work: recreating the wooden palisades, the grass and clay huts, the cooking fires and the ceremonies that marked the life of this Neolithic community. A site for curious minds and walkers who love discreet heritage.
The Toul-Goulic camp belongs to the category of barred spur camps, a form of settlement and fortification characteristic of the Neolithic and Bronze Age in Brittany. Its construction principle is based on making the most of the natural relief: three sides of the promontory are protected by steep slopes falling towards the Blavet gorges, while the fourth side - the most accessible - is closed off by one or more artificial earth and stone embankments known as a "barrage". This transverse closure, the remains of which can still be seen in the topography, could originally have been several metres high and crowned with a wooden palisade. The materials used are exclusively local: the earth extracted from the ditches dug in front of the embankments forms the body of the ramparts, while granitic rock and schist, omnipresent in the subsoil of Trémargat, are used for facing or blocking. This earth and stone architecture, with no binders, is typical of Armorican Neolithic building practices. The surface area of the internal space delimited by these defences is estimated at several hectares, allowing the installation of a grouped habitat and areas reserved for craft and agricultural activities. Today, the visible structures take the form of discrete but legible reliefs: slightly raised ridges of earth, depressions corresponding to the old ditches, and alignments of outcropping stones. The vegetation - open moorland, gorse and oak woodland - gives the site a special atmosphere that makes the archaeological landscape easier to read for the trained eye.
