Nestling in the Médoc vineyards of Vertheuil, Château de Beyzac stands out as one of those country gentleman's residences that dot the left bank of the Gironde, halfway between the sober elegance of French classicism and the architectural ambition of the Bordeaux bourgeoisie of the Second Empire. Its composite appearance, the result of two separate building campaigns, gives it a singular architectural personality found nowhere else in the region. What immediately sets Beyzac apart is the creative tension between its two souls: the geometric rigour of the eighteenth century, evident in the symmetry of the courtyard framed by vast outbuildings, and the picturesque boldness of the nineteenth century, embodied in the canted rotunda that breaks with the expected frontal aspect of the main building. Visitors will discover a building that is not revealed at a glance, but in successive fragments. The interior experience extends this double interpretation: the spiral staircase with two straight flights, adorned with a remarkable wrought-iron banister with elaborate scrolls, bears witness to the skills of 18th-century Bordeaux ironworkers. The western facade, the most representative, features a symmetrical elevation punctuated by two square pavilions at the corners, in keeping with the canons of classical Bordeaux provincial architecture. The addition of the canted rotunda in the 1860s is the building's main architectural feature. Placed in front of the central body of the west facade, this slightly projecting rotunda breaks away from the classical flatness of the composition and introduces a spatial dynamism typical of the eclectic influences of the Second Empire. The canted sections harmoniously link the cylindrical volume with the rectilinear façade, creating an interplay of light and shadow that was particularly popular with architects of the period. The building materials, typical of the Médoc, probably include local ashlar limestone, known as Bordeaux stone or asteriated limestone, which gives the building its characteristic golden-blonde hue.
