History
Just outside Angers, on the left bank of the Loire, the Manoir de Belligan is set in the landscape of gentle hills and vineyards that made the reputation of medieval Anjou. Discreet yet architecturally coherent, it aptly illustrates the model of the Anjou seigneurial manor house of the late Middle Ages: neither a fortress nor a prestigious château, but the quality residence of a provincial lineage attached to its land. What sets Belligan apart from the countless manor houses in Maine-et-Loire is the remarkable integrity of its main building, which has been spared the excessive alterations that disfigured so many manor houses from the 17th to the 19th century. The dwelling retains its original proportions, with stone mullioned windows and a sober cornice that forms a recognisable silhouette amongst the trees. The whole bears witness to the skills of the tufa masons of Anjou, who were able to shape this blonde limestone with astonishing precision and lightness. To visit Belligan is to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of 15th-century Anjou, still intact. Far from the crowds that flock to the royal châteaux of the Loire, the manor house is an invitation to a more intimate, almost confidential contemplation. Architecture
The Manoir de Belligan is a late-Gothic manor house, typical of the Anjou region in the second half of the 15th century. Built of tuffeau, the blonde limestone quarried from the cliffs of the Loire Valley, the main building has a sober, two-storey elevation, covered by a steeply pitched roof of Anjou slate - the king material in this region, where the Trélazé slate quarries have supplied the entire local building industry since the 14th century. The stone mullioned windows, evenly spaced along the façades, bear witness to a sense of composition that was still attached to Gothic canons, but was already attentive to the balance and symmetry that prefigured the great order of the Renaissance. The main facade stands out for the quality of its worked openings: the lattice mullions, adorned with fine accolade mouldings, reveal the mastery of the Anjou stonemasons, heirs to a tradition of tufa sculpture dating back to the great Gothic works of the cathedral of Saint-Maurice in Angers. A spiral staircase housed in a low-profile tower, in keeping with local custom, elegantly leads to the upper floors. The farm outbuildings, arranged loosely around the courtyard, complete the ensemble and are a reminder of the estate's original vocation: a productive estate as much as a prestigious residence.
