Base de lancement de V1, located in Mesnil-au-Val (Manche), is a modern edifice built in the 19th-20th centuries. The monument is currently closed to visitors.
A striking vestige of the Second World War, this Luftwaffe V1 launch base remains one of the few preserved heavyweight sites in the Cotentin region, with its intact launch pad and network of concrete runways.
Hidden away in the lush green bocage of the Cotentin region, the Sorellerie site at Mesnil-au-Val is one of the most striking architectural testimonies to the German occupation of Normandy. This V1 launch base - listed as a Historic Monument in 2024 - offers visitors a brutal and authentic plunge into the industrial reality of total war, a far cry from the romantic images we often associate with the region's châteaux. What makes this site truly unique among the eight heavy installations on the outskirts of Cherbourg is the remarkable state of preservation of its launch pad. Spared by the Royal Air Force bombing raids that devastated the other structures in 1944, this ramp still stands out in the agricultural landscape like a concrete arrow pointing towards England - a threat frozen in time, neutralised by history before it could even fire its first missile. The visitor experience is that of an open-air archaeology of war. Walking along the network of concrete tracks winding through the tall grass, visitors gradually discover the different functions of the base: the entrance garage, the pumping station, the technicians' blockhouse, the storage shelters and the mysterious non-magnetic concrete and brick building. The partially collapsed bombed structures add a tragic, visceral dimension to the atmosphere. The site's unspoilt agricultural setting amplifies the contrast between the brutality of the military installations and the gentle Normandy bocage. For military history enthusiasts, lovers of industrial heritage or simply curious visitors in search of a powerful memorial experience, this listed site is an essential stop-off point in the discovery of the Cotentin region during the Second World War.
The Mesnil-au-Val V1 launch base illustrates the functionalist military architecture of the Second World War in all its brutal efficiency. The entire site is organised around a network of concrete runways that structure the agricultural area according to a strict operational logic: each part of the base is served by these roads, which were used to move missiles and heavy equipment. The spatial organisation follows a plan typical of Luftwaffe heavy bases, with a clear distinction between functions: at the entrance, on the road side, a straight garage and a pumping station provide logistical and fuel supply functions. A central area groups together the buildings used for technical and human purposes - blockhouses for technicians, shelters for storing equipment and fuel, and a large water tank. The non-magnetic building, built of reinforced concrete and brick, occupies an isolated position: intended for the final assembly and calibration of the missiles' gyroscopic navigation systems, it had to be free from any magnetic disturbance. Finally, at the northern end, the launch ramp facing the English coast is the central and best-preserved element of the facility. Three "ski garage" type storage shelters - so named for their characteristic arched shape - flank the east and west of the launch area and were intended to house the assembled missiles awaiting firing. A total of sixteen distinct architectural elements have been identified on the site, the majority of which show significant damage from the 1944 bombing raids.
