Vestige gallo-romain unique en Provence, cet autel votif de Fontvieille témoigne de la ferveur religieuse antique dans les Alpilles, avec ses reliefs sculptés consacrés aux divinités locales et romaines.
In the heart of Provence's Alpilles region, in Fontvieille, stands a silent witness to Roman antiquity: the Gallo-Roman altar of La Coquille. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1948, this votive altar is one of the rare examples of Gallo-Roman religious sculpture preserved in situ in the Bouches-du-Rhône département. Its discovery has provided archaeologists with an invaluable insight into the religious practices of the region's Romanised populations, halfway between indigenous traditions and beliefs imported from Rome. What makes this altar truly unique is the very nature of its iconography. The shell motif, from which it takes its name, was a polymorphous symbol in ancient times, associated with Venus-Aphrodite, fertility, the cycle of life and the regeneration of souls. Its presence on a funerary or votive altar in Provence is not accidental - the region, a crossroads between the Mediterranean world and inland Gaul, offered fertile ground for the syncretisation of beliefs. Fontvieille itself, on the banks of the Craponne canal and at the foot of the Alpilles mountains, was a place of passage and intense economic activity during the Roman period. To visit the Coquille altar is to engage in an intimate dialogue with provincial antiquity, far removed from the great monumental complexes of Arles or Nîmes. The human scale of this object of worship, the finesse of its relief despite centuries of erosion, and the exceptional landscape of the Alpilles make it an ideal stop-off point for anyone interested in archaeology and the history of ancient religions. The natural setting enhances the emotion of the place. Fontvieille, immortalised by Alphonse Daudet and its windmills, is bathed in the golden light characteristic of inland Provence. Around the altar, the garrigue, olive groves and white limestone are a reminder that this area was intensely inhabited and cultivated from Roman times, when the Via Aurelia and its branches provided the economic and religious life of the entire region.
The Gallo-Roman altar at La Coquille belongs to the category of votive altars with sculpted faces, typical of Roman provincial lapidary production in the Narbonnaise region. Carved from local Alpilles limestone - a dense white stone ideal for sculpture - it has the characteristic shape of ancient altars: a quadrangular shaft resting on a moulded base and topped by a cymaised crown, the corners of which may have been decorated with pulvini (stone cushions) or acroteria, typical elements of the Roman funerary and votive repertoire. The sculpted decoration, centred on the shell motif (concha), occupies the main face of the altar. This type of representation, in bas-relief, reveals the mastery of local stonemasons trained in the Arles workshops, renowned throughout the Roman West for the quality of their work. The sides could be decorated with plant garlands, paterae (libation cups) or pilasters imitating monumental Roman architecture - all elements that anchor this object in the great tradition of official imperial art adapted to the needs of provincial piety. The altar's relatively modest dimensions suggest that it was intended for semi-private or community use, rather than as a large-scale public monument. This human scale, combined with the quality of the workmanship of the reliefs, makes it a representative example of Gallo-Roman craftsmanship of intermediate quality, neither a great state monument nor a simple popular ex-voto, but rather the expression of an accomplished and cultivated devotion.
