Nestling in the Gironde countryside of Izon, at the gateway to the Entre-Deux-Mers region, Château d'Anglade is one of those residences of the Bordeaux landed gentry that combine architectural sobriety with interior refinement. Far from the gaudy splendour of the great wine châteaux, it embodies an ideal of eighteenth-century provincial aristocratic life: reasoned elegance set in a calm, verdant landscape. What really sets Anglade apart is the remarkable continuity of its history within the same territory. Where other estates are the result of a single decision and a single building site, this one is the culmination of several centuries of reconstruction: from a primitive feudal motte to a Renaissance castel, right up to today's classical edifice, the soil of Izon has seen a succession of radically different forms of seigneurial life. This layered memory gives the site a rare depth. The attentive visitor will first be struck by the composition of the estate: two seventeenth-century pavilions, now in ruins, guard the entrance like sentinels of time, instilling an atmosphere of romantic melancholy even before entering the main courtyard. This courtyard, enclosed in a U-shape by the outbuildings, exudes a sense of order and serenity characteristic of French provincial classicism. Château d'Anglade is laid out in a classic U-shape, typical of the large French rural residences of the 18th century. On either side of these pavilions, small, low buildings extend the composition southwards, housing a private chapel to the east, a common practice among provincial Catholic nobility. Buildings used as outbuildings close off the sides of the main courtyard, giving the complex its characteristic U-shaped silhouette facing south. The two main facades show particular attention to symmetrical composition. The south facade features a slight overhang at its centre, known as a "avant-corps", into which the main doorway is set, topped by a staircase. The north facade adopts the same principle but with a more pronounced projection and rounded corners, a refined detail that betrays an architect keen to nuance and humanise classical rigour. These rounded projections are typical of the architectural vocabulary of Bordeaux in the second half of the 18th century, and can also be found in the town houses of the Gironde capital. The entrance to the estate is still marked by two 17th-century pavilions, now in a state of partial ruin, reminiscent of a more monumental entrance in the past. Inside, the rooms of the main building have preserved their period woodwork, panelling and painted joinery, testifying to the care taken with the interior décor and the quality of Bordeaux craftsmen at the height of the Atlantic trade.
