History
In the heart of the village of Thémines, in the Lot department, the old market hall stands as a silent reminder of the commercial and rural life of Quercy under the Ancien Régime. Built in the 17th century, this small square-plan market hall embodies the region's vernacular architecture with remarkable economy of means: sober forms, robust materials and intelligent construction. What immediately sets this monument apart is the particular grace of its roof. The shale roof - a local stone with a dark, dense grain - rests on an oak framework of admirable structural coherence. The coyaux, the overhanging timbers, give the roof that typical Quercy camber, an almost organic movement that softens the profile of the building and sets it apart from the halls of neighbouring regions. Visitors approaching the building are struck by the orderly simplicity of the façade: four corner pillars and eight monolithic intermediate pillars form a rustic colonnade, but one that is beautifully maintained. Between them, a low wall allows light and air to filter through, reminding us of the primary purpose of this open space dedicated to exchanges. Three entrances pierce this wall, inviting you into the cool shade of the hall. In the north-east corner, a touching detail catches the eye: a stone plinth where the official grain measures were once placed, guaranteeing the fairness of transactions. These instruments have now disappeared, but the plinth remains, a concrete vestige of a grain economy that is now a thing of the past. Architecture
The hall at Thémines adopts a simple, efficient square plan, typical of French rural halls of the modern era. Four massive corner pillars and eight monolithic intermediate pillars - each carved from a single block of local limestone - make up an open structure that is both visually light and structurally robust. Between these pillars runs a low wall, pierced by three entrances, which delimits the space without enclosing it, allowing the circulation of air and natural light essential to a covered market. The original oak roof structure is the centrepiece of the building. The rafters rest at the foot on a low beam and rest at the top against the hip rafters, forming a geometric network of great mechanical coherence. A second clutch joins them at mid-height, reinforcing the assembly against lateral thrusts. The most remarkable feature is the coyaux: these overhanging pieces of wood, resting on the lower rafters and on the rafters for around a quarter of their length, create the distinctive arch of Quercy roofs - a slightly curved profile, halfway between the dry slope of the Massif Central and the softness of Mediterranean roofs. The shale roofing, pegged onto a chestnut or oak floor, gives the whole structure a dark, velvety patina that is characteristic of the Lot's built landscape. This local material, extracted from schist deposits in the Quercy region, provides excellent waterproofing and remarkable durability, which explains the exemplary preservation of this roof after more than three centuries.
